The Deepwater Horizon drilling rig caught fire and sank in the Gulf of Mexico, killing 11 crew members. The rig was drilling an exploratory well for BP 5,000 feet underwater using dynamic positioning to maintain its location. It is believed that oil and gas entered the wellbore undetected, causing an explosion that overwhelmed safety systems. Efforts to plug the well with ROVs were unsuccessful, and oil continues to spill from the sunken rig. Additional rigs will be brought in to drill a relief well and intercept the blown out well to finally stop the flow of oil.
