Killer whale (Orcinus orca) herds form with a distinct age and sex structure. They primarily prey
upon endotherms (eg. seals, porpoises, sea lions).
12
In late March, the brown coat of ermine (Mustela erminea) first appears as a mid-dorsal stripe that
gradually spreads to all parts of the body. In late October, the process is reversed and the white
winter coat appears after the molt.
12
The wolf (Canis lupus) has a similar appearance to a large German shepherd dog, but it is thinner
and has longer legs and larger paws. The skull is relatively heavy and the teeth are large. They
have diverse prey, but tend to kill 1 - 1.5 large animals each month.
12
Abalone (Haliotis kamtschatkana) tolerate water temperatures of 4 - 10C in the winter months, but
8- 14C in the summer. The enzyme, lactate dehydrogenase is expressed in different forms
(isoforms) in the summer relative to the winter. Isoform switching helps to maintain enzyme
function regardless of body temperature.
12
Collared lemming (Dicrostonyx torquatus) remodel their claws seasonally. In winter the pads of the
third and fourth digit bulge and the claws above the pads, lengthen. These special claws are used
to dig burrows through snowbanks. In the spring, claw growth slows and the pads return to a
smaller size.

Declining populations of honeybees and bumblebees is a major.pdfmotilajain
Declining populations of honeybees and bumblebees is a major concem for human agriculture as
pollination services for vegetable, fruit and nut crops may decrease. Humans can respond by
having farm workers hand pollinate these valuable crops. However, what about all the other
flowering plant species on Earth? How will they be pollinated? To break this issue down, answer
the following questions. (1) Are all plant species pollinated by animals? If not, what other
pollination mechanism provides for ouf forossing? (2) Are all plant species that ARE pollinated by
animals pollinated by honeybee. and bumblebee species that are exhibliting population declines?
If not, what other animal pollinators perform this function? (3) Given the answers above, predict
the Impact of the loss of some honeybee and bumblebee species on the specles composilion of
natural plant communities..
Decomposing a system into subsystems reduces the complexity .pdfmotilajain
Decomposing a system into subsystems reduces the complexity developers have to deal with by
simplifying the parts and increasing their coherence. Decomposing a system into simpler parts
usually results into increasing a different kind of complexity: Simpler parts also means a larger
number of parts and interfaces. If coherence is the guiding principle driving developers to
decompose a system into small parts, explain in your own words which competing principle drives
them to keep the total number of parts small?.

Death process 359 Consider a pure death process In suc.pdfmotilajain
Death process ( 359). Consider a pure death process. In such a process, individuals persist only
until they die and there are no replacements. The assumptions are similar to those in the pure
birth process, but now each individual, if still alive at time t, is removed in (t,t+t) with probability t.
Suppose that initially, there are n0 individuals at time t=0, and let Pn(t) be the probability that n
individuals are alive at time at time t. (a) Derive the system of differential equations for Pn(t). (b)
For simpilciity, we will assume here and below that =1. Show that Pn0(t)=en0t, and that Pn01=n0e
(n01)t(1et). (c) In general, show that that Pk(t)=(n0k)ekt(1et)n0k,k=n0,n01,0 satisfies the system of
differential equations for Pk(t). Now argue that this formula can be also be shown by using
Poisson process plus binomial distribution [without solving any differential equations!] (d) Use part
(c) to show that the probability that the population is extinct at time t is given by (1et)n0..

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
