Eris, Deciding on the Blockchain, Project Douglas by Casey Kuhlman
1. Deciding on the Blockchain:
Decision Making and Eris, by Project Ðouglas
2. Caveats
● This is not about starting Flame Wars
● This is not about transmission of value
● With all respect to distributed systems thinkers
who have come before us, we have no intention
of discounting any set of contributions.
5. Centralized Decision Taking
● But … there is a status quo bias and an
opportunity to enforce that bias.
● But … single points of failure reduce resiliency
to shocks.
● But … capturing centralized systems is easier.
8. What Does Eris Do?
● The entry point for taking a decision is having a
discussion.
– Is there a problem?
– What is the problem?
– How can we address the problem?
● Eris supports this step with a basic forum
functionality.
9. What Does Eris Do?
● The second phase for taking a decision is filtering
the discussion.
– What are the range of ideas as to what the problem
actually is?
– What are the relative advantages of any particular set of
solutions vis a vis their relative disadvantages to other
courses of actions?
● Eris supports this step with a basic up vote || down
vote functionality in combination with an embedded
reputation system.
10. What Does Eris Do?
● The third phase for taking a decision is
formalizing the decision to be made.
– Bounding the problem
– Deciding on one or more precise solutions to the
problem
● Eris supports this step by providing an
endorsement functionality which is similar in
nature to a formalized petition system. (This is
still a work in progress)
11. What Does Eris Do?
● The final step in taking a decision is in querying
the nodes within the network as to their
decision.
– Formalized voting process
● Eris supports this with an issues methodology
that determines consensus based upon voting
metrics and methodologies. (Right now we
have reputation weighted voting, but there are
others on our work plan for future versions).
