- Hydroponics comes from a Latin word which
literally means “Working Water”. It’s the growing
of plants without soil.
- Hydroponics is the cultivation of plants in a
nutrient solution rather than soil.

Hydroponics: A Basic Understanding
Hydroponic System: General Facts
almost any hydroponic system will
produce acceptable growth
any plant can be grown in a
hydroponics system
Hydroponics: The Pros and Cons
• Advantages (Pros)
– Saves space & water
– Fewer weeds, diseases & parasites
– Grow plants anywhere (space?)
• Disadvantages (Cons)
– High set up cost
– High maintenance (labor)
– More complicated

Flow Regime and Treatment Capacity
• Vertical flow (100 l/pot-day or 1.5 m3/day)
• Horizontal flow (3 – 4.2 m3/day or
0.5-0.7 l/min or
4.3-6 m3/day)
Total treatment capacity = 5.8-7.5 m3/day
Irrigation System
• Flood and drain
• Continuous dripping
• Root spraying
Crops in Reuse System
• Cropping started by the start of the second week of June,
2008
• Seedling were bought and brought from a local nursery
• Vegetables: Winter squash, Green Beans, corn, eggplants,
and Cherry tomatoes
• Various cut flowersTagetes erecta , Asarina
procumbens, Alonsoa warscewiczii, Calendula officinalis
Gitano Mix, Arctotis ×hybrida + + +
Winter Squash
Research Variables
• Treatment efficiency
• Treatment cost and feasibility
• Pot and channel system
• Testing water-based systems; and media systems
• Open – active and closed Systems - passive (w or w/o
recirculation)
• Testing of flood/draining, continuous dripping, and root
spraying irrigation systems
• Reuse of flowers and vegetables : growth and nutrient
and salts uptake
