Thinking of getting a dog? Be aware that breeds like Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, and German Shepherds can be loyal and dangerous. Proper training and socialization are crucial to preventing aggressive behaviors. Ensure safety by understanding their needs and always supervising interactions. Jump For Joy – It’s Cookie Time!
It’s the most wonderful time of the year; Cookie Sales
begin Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011! Get ready to practice
your sales pitch and get out there! Selling cookies will
help you learn business ethics, money management,
leadership and people skills. Talk to friends and family
and tell them all about how cookies help you and your
troop. Don’t be afraid to ask your leader questions or ask
for tips. Practice your sales pitch with your fellow troop
members or your parents. Take the lead! Our council’s goal is to sell
1.4 million boxes of cookies. The Girl Scout Cookie Program is the largest
girl-led business in the country and you’re part of it! Girl Scout cookies
are not only yummy but they help your troop do your favorite activities. Sit
down with your troop to set realistic goals for cookie sales and decide what
you want to do with the Cookie Credits you collect. Credits can take you to
summer camp, help you travel, help your community and more. Plus you
can earn fun incentives for selling cookies!

Help Us Celebrate our Big Birthday—100!
2012 is a big year for Girl Scouts—our 100th anniversary! This is a time to
commemorate the past and embrace the future of Scouting. Girl Scouts
of Kansas Heartland is putting together a committee to help plan activities
for this momentous year. We still need a few girl committee members to
provide input. The committee would also like to hear your ideas about
how we should celebrate 100 years strong with Girl Scouts. If you have a
suggestion or would like to be a part of this historical event please e-mail
anniversary@gskh.org with your ideas.
Stay Involved and Make New Friends
Ambassador Girl Scout Jessica Kennedy of Colby certainly knows how to make new friends, and keep them! As a
12-year member of Girl Scouts, Jessica has been able to enjoy a wide variety of exciting Girl Scout experiences. Her most
memorable experience was serving on the national board of lmk.girlscouts.org, an online safety Web site created for
girls and their parents by GSUSA and Microsoft Windows.
“Being involved with LMK was awesome!,” said Jessica.
“I got to go to Seattle and New York, and I
made the most amazing friends.”
By using text messages and Facebook, these 10 girls from
across the US have remained close, and are even planning a
trip to North Carolina together in the summer of 2011. Jessica
thinks of the group as a “little family” and plans on keeping
in touch even after high school.
“I’ve been able to do so many things because I stayed in
Girl Scouting,” said Jessica. “Our troop has helped our
local community through service projects, and now I even
have close friends across the country. There are so many
opportunities, even scholarships! I would encourage all
Girl Scouts to stay involved.” Jessica Kennedy, Colby (center), along with Elizabeth
Wasinger, Wichita (far right), met new friends while visiting

enjoying many fun activities. Activities included archery, canoeing, flashlight hiking, crafts, horseback riding, climbing the A Great Honor

weekend camping at Fall River State Park. The weekend
attraction was the 8th Annual Mountain Man Rendezvous.
The girls have participated in the rendezvous for the last
five years. This year was a special year because Dave
“Yellowhand” Clark, medicine man “Lone Wolf” Ken
Feudner, and their friend “Reg,” held an adoption ceremony.
They adopted the troops as their granddaughters and the
leaders as their daughters and son. The ceremony was
carried out in the traditional way of Lone Wolf’s ancestors.
This was a great honor for all those involved.

knew where they were going (besides parents
who received an itinerary). The first stop in the

and muscles work together in our bodies. The next stop on the mystery trip was Central

substance abuse. The girls were able to learn about why it is critically important to stay away
from alcohol and drugs. The final stop on the trip was the YMCA where girls learned about
nutrition and healthy eating, exercise and stress relief. Girls were able to enjoy a session
of Yoga to relieve the stresses of the day.
Girl, MD: Medical Careers Day
The third fall event in the Healthy Today, Healthy Tomorrow series, Girl MD, allowed Girl Scouts to work in conjunction

Girl Scouts Pay Respect to the United States through Flag Retirement Ceremony
Girl Scouts are one of the few organizations that are allowed to conduct a flag retirement ceremony which involves respectfully putting a torn or tattered flag to rest. Katharine Piper
