Debian is a universal operating system that supports a wide variety of architectures. It has over 30,000 packages and is widely used in servers and desktops, such as Ubuntu. Debian was started in 1993 by Ian Murdock and takes its name from his daughter Debra. It undergoes extensive testing through unstable and testing branches before software is declared stable. Ubuntu derives 90% of its packages from Debian unstable and helps test packages. There are many ways for users to contribute, such as reporting bugs, localizing the desktop, and coding new applications.
