New York City faced many challenges 30 years ago including high crime, unemployment, and an unstable government, but the city has since strengthened with low crime, fewer unemployed, and growing population. However, new challenges now exist such as accommodating growth, aging infrastructure, and environmental issues. PlaNYC was created with the goals of creating affordable housing, improving parks and waterways, expanding transit, making energy sources cleaner and more reliable, reducing air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions by 30%, and addressing climate change impacts.
