Editor's Notes

  • #3 The publication documented low levels of financial development in the region but also hopeful trends and illustrated policy options. Some of the most compelling and general facts to mention about the African financial systems are: Very low rate of access to financial services be it formal or semi-formal: in fact, less than 20% of African household in average have access to financial services (formal and semi-formal) with wide disparities going from 13% in Mozambique to 67.5% in South Africa;Low financial development with an average ratio of private credit to GDP of 21% in Africa compared to 32% in East Asia between 1980 and 2007 ( despite an increasing trend of more than 20 percent points since 1990).
