The document outlines the pathways, activities, and outcomes of the ALTER project which aims to understand the relationships between poverty, livelihoods, and soil ecosystem services. The project consists of 4 work packages that seek to: 1) understand socio-economic relationships between soils and poverty; 2) assess soil capacity to provide ecosystem services; 3) assess mechanisms to alleviate poverty through soil carbon; and 4) deliver development and academic impacts. Key activities include measuring poverty and ecosystem dependence, identifying drivers of land use change, evaluating soil carbon management options, and assessing adoption barriers. Impact will be achieved through workshops, reports, publications, and developing an understanding of poverty/livelihood relationships and conditions for soil conservation investments.

The project involved interviewing over 800 farmers across 7 pilot villages. However, LIKPs are at risk of being lost if not documented or integrated into climate policy. Moving forward, the project aims to conduct more surveys, engage decision-makers to share findings on valuing LIKPs, and support custodians of LIKPs in lobbying for their integration into climate plans and budgets.

These include the characteristics of watersheds and communities, as well as farmers' attitudes, networks, and the practices themselves. 2) In Indian Creek, Illinois, over 50% of the land is now under conservation due to factors like a cohesive community, dedicated staff, and partnerships across the agricultural industry that engaged farmers. 3) Reaching farmers requires understanding their social networks and that they are most influenced by other farmers and agricultural retailers rather than conservation agencies. Farmers' characteristics like age, farm size, and environmental attitudes also impact adoption.

Improving Water Quality through Better Targeting of Farm Conservation Funds
