David Borland’S Career Summary
1. The second half of the 20 th Century and early years of the 21 st have surely seen unrivalled technology advances in all aspects of business and home life. We now accept and use technology which would have been the basis of Science Fiction in the 50s. Nowhere is that more evident than in the area of glass production and installation where traditional skills have been replaced or enhanced by modern and revolutionary production equipment. As someone working in the glass industry during this transition, I have been fortunate to gain enviable experience of both the traditional methods as well as the introduction of volume production equipment. As the base products used in production became more sophisticated I have also had the benefit of ground floor experience of working with prototypes and early production of established products such as Low Emissivity and Solar Control glasses. The following presentation will give more detail on my areas of expertise and skills.
2. My involvement in Insulating Glass production commenced in 1973 as part of the initial management team of Cavity Sealed Unit Co Ltd in Cumbernauld, Scotland. We supplied IGUs to the trade throughout Scotland and the North of England. From a fairly simple production line, the company rapidly introduced automated systems for manufacture culminating in the introduction of a Lisec production line incorporating washing, assembly & sealing. The company was acquired by the Heywood Williams group in 1978 (subsequently absorbed into the downstream operations of Pilkington Glass). Total Years involved directly in Double Glazing production: 15 years + Positions Held: Order Processor; Sales Office Manager; Sales Manager; General Manager & Managing Director Throughout my career I have remained closely associated with the IG industry either in a manufacturing capacity or as a supplier. During those years I have gained experience in the various methods of manufacture i.e. Dual seal, hot melt & swiggle strip. That experience includes the production of decorative units, solar control, low emissivity and structural glazing units. Experienced in managing Annual IG production of 400,000 m2
3. Experienced in managing Annual laminated production of 500,000 m2 In 1987 I was appointed to head up the management team responsible for setting up and commissioning Scotland’s first laminated production line at Rutherglen, Glasgow. The production line was also the World’s first laminated line capable of producing full Jumbo laminated (6000mm x 3210mm). From the start up in September 1988, the company enjoyed considerable growth moving from single to two-shift production within 12 months (a full year ahead of schedule) and gained healthy year-on-year growth supplying direct customers and distributors throughout the UK. By 1999 the company was responsible for supplying 12% of the UK’s laminated glass requirements (Original target: 8%) Total Years involved directly in laminated production: 12 years Position Held: Managing Director
4. Polishing Bevelling Total Years involved directly in Glass Processing / Decorative Glass production: 25 years In 1982 it was evident that the traditional replacement glazing business enjoyed by Hurry Brothers was on the decline. It was decided that the addition of machinery based glass processing would be a positive step forward. I was given the remit to investigate the market and install the necessary machinery for this development. By 1988 the company had been successfully transformed into Scotland’s largest decorative glass processor with a turnover equal to more than 3 times of that in 1982. The new processing division included: - Drilling CNC Crystal Cut Sandblasting Leaded and Stained Glass Positions Held: Works Manager; General Manager & Managing Director Glass Bending
5. Total Years involved directly in toughened production: 2 years Although my direct production experience in toughening is limited in comparison with other types of production, I have worked closely with toughening companies throughout my career. As a long standing raw material supplier to toughening companies I have had to provide considerable technical support and information for their production. This has included the suitability of products such as low emissivity and solar control glasses for toughening and the suitability of supplied toughened for the laminating process. As an equally long standing customer of toughened companies, I have also had to provide detailed specification and drawings for products such as structural glass assemblies, shower enclosures and glass balustrades.
6. Total Years involved directly in Aluminium production & installation: 20 years Positions Held: Department Manager; Sales Manager & Managing Director My introduction to Aluminium production was in 1979 at Hurry Brothers when appointed to set up and manage an Aluminium fabrication and installation division. As an authorised Kawneer distributor & installer, the company was very quickly involved in most areas of commercial aluminium such as Shopfronts; Commercial Windows and Curtain Walling. The successful growth of the Aluminium division owed much to the excellent backup and training received by Kawneer which allowed the company to approach contractors with confidence of providing a full and professional service This experience has also been of great assistance when dealing with customers involved in building envelopes, as this personal knowledge greatly improves understanding of the difficulties and requirements that these customers face on a day-to-day basis
7. As glass products have developed over the years so has the need to provide clients and building professionals with relevant technical data. With over 35 years experience in Glass Production and Installation I have accumulated a vast database of information and gained skills which allow me to provide technical information or make recommendations on such aspects as: - Wind Loading ‘ U’ Values ‘ g’ Values Acoustics Safety Blast resistance Thermal Stress Fire Protection BS/EN Standards ASTM Standards ISO9001 Glazing methods Over the years I have also produced many technical catalogues & datasheets relevant to the company’s product range
8. Total Years using/operating Computers & Computer systems: 30 years Realising at a very early stage of my career, the importance and significance of computer skills, I purchased one of the very first personal computers and taught myself to program it using BASIC computer language. My interest in computers and programming has continued to this day. My interest has also allowed me to provide training to others. Although many of the programs I have used have been product or process specific I am also proficient in the programs illustrated below.
