The document discusses innovative technology to improve medication adherence. It notes that between 30-50% of prescribed medicines are not taken as recommended, costing the NHS billions. The YOURmeds system is presented as an intelligent medication packaging solution that provides reminders and monitoring to improve adherence. It consolidates medications into clear blister packs with reminders. Sensors track when medications are accessed and share this data through a portal. The system aims to increase social care capacity by replacing some visits with remote monitoring. Clinical trials are planned to study its impact on conditions like heart failure and diabetes that account for a large burden on the healthcare system.
1. Wessex Health Innovation Forum
Using Innovative Technology to Improve Medication Adherence
Wessex AHSN, Tuesday 16th May 2017
2. • £9,370,000,000 spent on Prescriptions
• £13,062,000,000 spent on Long Term Care of which 52% spent on over 65
• 31.1% of the Population is over 60 years of age, worsening trajectory
• 15,000,000 People with Long Term Conditions: 70% of all Health & Social Care
Expenditure
• Between 30 and 50% of prescribed medicines are not taken as recommended.
Implications:
o Up to £4,685,000,000 of medication is potentially ‘not accounted for’
o Worse Outcomes for almost 50% of people with LT Conditions
o Higher Cost to NHS England
o Social Care Costs Increase
The Numbers for England
3. Problem being addressed
• 1 billion prescriptions dispensed in England have an NIC of £9.37 bn
(Circa 8-10% of whole NHS Budget)
o How many of these were taken?
o How did they improve outcomes?
o How do we KNOW?
• Non-adherence increases burden to NHS
• There is no statistically robust data that informs the debate on medication
adherence: The World Health Organisation “WHO” data suggests 20% to 50% non-
adherence
• We can now “MEASURE this objectively “– no self-reporting bias
4. What is YOURmeds?
• YOURmeds is an intelligent Medication Packaging Solution (IMPS)
o Comprises of four (4) components, Medpack, Tag, Portal & Apps
o Provides an Audible & Visual alert when medication is due
o Creates a user support network to remind people if they forget
o Can be used by everyone, irrespective of cognitive levels
o Is pharmacy filled
• It also performs a telecare type function; open the blister signals cognitive activity
• User support Network creates safeguards in the system
• No change in behaviour; Key USP of YOURmeds
• YOURmeds is a G8 Cloud Crown Commercial Services supplier

6. Increasing Capacity in Social Care
• The Local Authority is the “Free Rider” ; HOW?
o Pharmacies fund the capital equipment cost to maintain customer loyalty and
therefore prescription revenue
o Domiciliary Care Agencies pays the monitoring fee and replaces some physical
visits with visits or phone-calls
o Councils receives the incremental capacity without any further outlay
7. How Technology can Help
o Record when Medication has been accessed, and crucially when it has NOT...
o Create a Support Network around each Patient that actually
INCREASES human contact not reduce it!
o Generate data that enables Healthcare Professionals to make informed decisions
For the first time Technology can join the dots:-
Patient .....Condition..... Adherence .....Outcome
o Technology Costs have Fallen Sharply – Adoption & Implementation is Simple:-
Plug & Play
o What is Required is Policy that says:-
We want to Monitor; How Public Money on Prescription is Spent
o Up to 10% Increase in Social Care Capacity & Better Outcomes for NHS
Staff and Patients
8. Clinical Opportunities
• We are focused on two Clinical Priorities
– Patients at Risk of Heart Failure (2% of NHS Budget)
– Type 2 Diabetes (7% of NHS Budget)
• QA Hospital – Portsmouth has 800 patients at risk of heart failure.
– Clinical Team believe at least 70% want to be adherent (560) but have issues.
30% are willfully non-adherent
– Re- admission rates are high, with associated costs.
– We can target the 560 patients who want to improve adherence
• Type 2 Diabetes: a multi centre study to assess whether YOURmeds helps patients
manage their condition.
• Bristol / Weston, Leeds, Isle of Wight
– Currently preparing the research protocol supported by NIHR-RDS.
– Senior consultants keen to explore the potential of YOURmeds.
