Case Study 1: wearability study
• Smart patch for physiological monitoring
• One-week trial on residents with dementia at
Kettlewell Nursing Home, Graham Care Group
• Conclusions:
– Product acceptance by most residents
– High level of interest from families, e.g. quality of sleep,
best time to visit, falls detector
– Useful clinical insights, e.g. monitor medication side
effects, early detection of infection, predict time to death
• Example of private consultancy project

Case Study 2: solving care
provider need
• Paper-based recording in domiciliary care visitor book
is inefficient and exposes managers to litigation risks.
• One-week trial comparing paper-based recording with
free voice-to-text recording and bespoke medical
voice-to-text recording.
• Example of project directly funded by the NHS (KSS
AHSN’s “Older People’s Programme”)

Case Study 3: business case
• Camera-based vital signs measurement software
• Created cost-benefit calculators specific to a number
of health and care markets, including care home and
domiciliary care markets, to compare:
– For the customer: Financial costs and benefits for purchasing and
adopting technology, e.g. raising occupancy rates and fees because
of higher CQC rating, higher occupancy rate (improved reputation),
slower costly resident and staff turnover, reduced insurance bill, etc.
– For the technology provider: Financial costs of production versus
potential revenue (market size and penetration rate)
• Example of private consultancy project

Case Study 4: UK grant funds
• Innovate UK (NHS funded) SBRI competition winner
• 4-month trial of discrete sound-based activity
monitoring technology in a number of health and care
settings, including domiciliary care
• Example of publicly funded project
– Innovate UK: SBRI, SMART, Biomedical Catalyst, Health and
Life Sciences competition
– Charities, e.g. Dunhill Medical, Wellcome Trust

Case Study 5: EU grant funds
• “Care through Innovation” EU project under
consideration by Coast to Capital LEP.
• If successful, would mean ~£370k available at 50%
match-funding rate to support innovations in the care
setting, lead by a care provider SME or a technology
SME (preferably in partnership with the other and
possibly with an academic institution too).
• Award announcement due in October
• Example of a public-private funded project

  • 9. © SEHTA 2016 Case Study 2: solving care provider need • Paper-based recording in domiciliary care visitor book is inefficient and exposes managers to litigation risks. • One-week trial comparing paper-based recording with free voice-to-text recording and bespoke medical voice-to-text recording. • Example of project directly funded by the NHS (KSS AHSN’s “Older People’s Programme”)
  • 10. © SEHTA 2016 Case Study 3: business case • Camera-based vital signs measurement software • Created cost-benefit calculators specific to a number of health and care markets, including care home and domiciliary care markets, to compare: – For the customer: Financial costs and benefits for purchasing and adopting technology, e.g. raising occupancy rates and fees because of higher CQC rating, higher occupancy rate (improved reputation), slower costly resident and staff turnover, reduced insurance bill, etc. – For the technology provider: Financial costs of production versus potential revenue (market size and penetration rate) • Example of private consultancy project
  • 11. © SEHTA 2016 Case Study 4: UK grant funds • Innovate UK (NHS funded) SBRI competition winner • 4-month trial of discrete sound-based activity monitoring technology in a number of health and care settings, including domiciliary care • Example of publicly funded project – Innovate UK: SBRI, SMART, Biomedical Catalyst, Health and Life Sciences competition – Charities, e.g. Dunhill Medical, Wellcome Trust
