The Dark Web refers to web pages that are intentionally hidden from standard search engines and browsers. Pages can be concealed by not having any inbound links, using special keywords or headers to reveal content, or residing within anonymous networks like TOR. The TOR network allows for complete anonymity and is thus associated with illegal activities like drug marketplaces, weapons sales, child pornography, and other illicit goods and services. To access the hidden Dark Web, special anonymizing browsers are required.

Dark web markets: from the silk road to alphabay, trends and developmentsAndres Baravalle
Within the last years, governmental bodies have been futilely trying to fight against dark web hosted marketplaces. Shortly after the closing of “The Silk Road” by the FBI and Europol in 2013, new successors have been established. Through the combination of cryptocurrencies and nonstandard communication protocols and tools, agents can anonymously trade in a marketplace for illegal items without leaving any record.
This talk will presents a research carried out to gain insights on the products and services sold within one of the larger marketplaces for drugs, fake ids and weapons on the Internet, Agora, and on new developments after the demise of Agora.
There are currently more than 555 million unique domains for surface level websites that the average internet user can access. But there are 500 times that number of hidden sites that aren’t obvious to most. These sites are referred to as the Deep Web, which often gets a negative connotation in our modern media. The real illegal activities happen on the Dark Web, which is a region of the internet only accessible through anonymized browsers such as Tor. This presentation will explain the differences between the surface, deep, and dark webs and explain what each contains.

What is the Dark Web & How to Access it
We explain the Dark Web, how it differs from the Deep Web, and how to get on the Dark Web using the Tor browser.
By Matt Egan | 30 Jan 2019
The internet is a much, much bigger place than you probably realise. You know about Facebook, Google, BBC iPlayer and Amazon, but do you really know what's lurking beyond those user-friendly and respectable websites?
This is but a tiny corner of the internet, and the Dark Web and the Deep Web loom in much shadier corners. Using Tor you can access them, but should you even want to visit the Dark Web or the Deep Web?
Let's take a tour to help you make up your mind. What is the Dark Web?
The Dark Web is a term that refers specifically to a collection of websites that exist on an encrypted network and cannot be found by using traditional search engines or visited by using traditional browsers.
Almost all sites on the so-called Dark Web hide their identity using the Tor encryption tool. You may know Tor for its ability to hide your identity and activity. You can use Tor to spoof your location so it appears you're in a different country to where you're really located, making it much like using a VPN service.
When a website is run through Tor it has much the same effect.
Indeed, it multiplies the effect. To visit a site on the Dark Web that is using Tor encryption, the web user needs to be using Tor. Just as the end user's IP address is bounced through several layers of encryption to appear to be at another IP address on the Tor network, so is that of the website.
There are several layers of magnitude more secrecy than the already secret act of using Tor to visit a website on the open internet - for both parties.
Thus, sites on the Dark Web can be visited by anyone, but it is very difficult to work out who is behind the sites. And it can be dangerous if you slip up and your identity is discovered.
You can also read our in-depth guide to using Tor if you want to know more about using the web anonymously and sending messages securely.
Why would I want to use the Dark Web?
Not all Dark Web sites use Tor. Some use similar services such as I2P, for example the Silk Road Reloaded. But the principle remains the same. The visitor has to use the same encryption tool as the site and - crucially - know where to find the site, in order to type in the URL and visit.
Infamous examples of Dark Web sites include the Silk Road and its offspring. The Silk Road was (and maybe still is) a website for the buying and selling of recreational drugs, and a lot more scary things besides. But there are also legitimate uses for the Dark Web. (Also see: Is it legal to buy drugs online?)
People operating within closed, totalitarian societies can use the Dark Web to communicate with the outside world. And given recent revelations about US- and UK government snooping on web use, you may feel it is sensible to take your communication on to the Dark Web.

Right below the surface of where the iceberg meets underwater is the deep web.
It’s comprised of the same general hostnames as sites on the surface web, but along with the extension of those domains.
This is the specific URL of your Facebook Messenger thread with a friend, or the Department of Justice’s public archival material, or Harvard’s internal communications system. The deep web is the majority of the internet as a whole.

Binding Authority: The company and its members are bound by the provisions of the MOA. Any action taken beyond its scope may be considered ultra vires (beyond the powers) of the company and therefore void.
Amendment of MOA:

2. What is Dark Web?
The Dark Web refers to any Web page that has
been intentionally concealed to hide in plain
sight or reside within a separate, but public
layer of the standard Internet.
3. The internet is built around Web pages that reference
other Web pages, if you have a destination Web page
which has no inbound links you have concealed that
page and it cannot be found by users or search
engines.
One example of this would be a blog posting that has
not been published yet, it may exist on the public
Internet but unless you know the exact URL, it will
never be found.
4. Other examples of Dark Web content and techniques include:
• Search boxes that will reveal a Web page or answer if a special
keyword is searched. Try this on Google with the keyword “distance
from sioux falls to new york”.
• Hiding a hidden message within a Web page comment which
would require knowledge of where to look. You can view the Source
of this page to see an example.
• Sub-domain names that are never linked to; for example,
“internal.brightplanet.com”.
• Relying on special HTTP headers to be present to show a different
version of a Web page.
• Images that are published but never actually references, for
example “/image/logo_back.gif”.
5. The most famous content that resides on the Dark
Web is found in the TOR network.
TOR network is an anonymous network that can only
be accessed with a special web browser, called the TOR
Browser. This is the portion of the internet mostly widely
known for illicit activities because of the anonymity associated
with the TOR network.
6. While personal freedom and privacy are admirable goals of the TOR
network, the ability to traverse the Internet with complete anonymity
nurtures a platform ripe for what is considered illegal activity in some
countries, including:
Controlled substance marketplaces
Armories selling all kinds of weapons
Child pornography
Unauthorized leaks of sensitive information
Money laundering
Copyright infringement
Credit Card fraud and identity theft
Users must use an anonymizer to access TOR Network/Dark Web
websites.
The Silk Road, an online marketplace/infamous drug bazaar on the Dark Web, is
inaccessible using a normal search engine or web browser.
