Lotte H Dhyrbye, Head of The Danish Think Tank – Libraries of the Future www.fremtidensbiblioteker.dk
In the Nordic library organizations we believe that international cooperation can create a better world. That's one of the reasons why we meet, once a year, with all the other Nordic countries, discussing how we can strengthen cooperation between libraries for the benefit of people and society. (And I don't mention Trump at all)
This year we meet in Copenhagen and have a series of presentations and discussions, which you can see more about here www.biblioteksdebat.dk

Editor's Notes
Denmark is rated as the most digital country in Europe, – and when it comes to the digital library we also get high ranking: About 50% of all new books are available as ebooks on the digital librarybookshelves
Denmark is rated as the most digital country in Europe, – and when it comes to the digital library we also get high ranking: About 50% of all new books are available as ebooks on the digital librarybookshelves
Despite this positive situation, we discovered that digital library strategies at a local level often appears as an appendix to the physical library strategy or even do not exist
Therefore, we produced one of the most profound analysis on the digital library use in Denmark– based upon both qualitative and quantitative data - A works supported by the Agency for culture and palaces in Denmark.
So what did we do? First we asked 12 danes in the qualitative preanalysis and herafter we asked 7000 Danes, both user and non-users and segmented the Danish population on the basis of classic variables, digital behavior out-side the library and digital library use, barriers and drivers
From these data we found 8 siginificant digital segments – and generated operational knowledge on the their library behavior, preferences and barrieres for digital library use in Denmark.
What more did we find: First finding : the digital library use is today almost as important as the physical use and this has happend in a very short period.
Store digitale forventninger 46% mod fysisk forventning på 56%
And more important from a digital perspective - we se a double up over the last three years of frequent digital users. A very important finding for both national and local library strategies and priorities. And we we belive what people are telleing us – it
We also found significant differencies in the before mentioned 8 segments – due to both lack of library interest, knowledge and digital competencies in general –and we musk ask our selves to whom are the digital library for?
Secondly: We found significant differences f.ex in gender -women are using the digital library services significantly more than the male users - A behavior that differs from the digital behavior – out-side the library.
Store digitale forventninger 46% mod fysisk forventning på 56%
Thirdly, we found that the digital behavior is a copy of our physical library behavior - we boorow books, we reboorow books and get inspiration about books.
And talking about books – it’s still our main purpose going to the library - with a overwhelming preference for the printed book. And actually we found very few pure digital users-
Forthly - almost 50% of the population find that lack of knowledge is the most important barrier for not using the digital library today - Its a major challenge for librarys to be digitally present and finally it is not natural for the users to use the digital library services unless they have a specific purpose
On the positive side - The greatest factor for using the digital library is visiting the physical library –so if we want to make digital users, the easiest way is to make them physical users first
Using the physical library is compared to other factors– from a scale from -1 to + 1, the far most important factor – surpassing other wellkonwn factors as gender, education and age
Digitalt orienteret
Finding 5; We found that digital library neutralizes the known correlation bewteen distance to the physical library and library use – and the digital library is therefore a real opportunity to sparcely populated areas
Another very interstting pattern namely that the digital library neutralizes the positive correlation between education and library use– and indicates important perctives for people not using the library today
So as a kind of conlusion , we see that the Danes are more and more digital in their library use, both now and in the future with and with higher higher expectation to the digital services – Libraries must therefore invest in and and prioritize the digital strategies and digital competencies because the future is digital and the furture is now
And on the other side – it must be in close interaction with the physcial library. The digital and physical library must therfeore be seen and developed as One library
