The Angololo Water Resources Development Project in Kenya and Uganda aims to address water, energy, and food insecurity in the region. The key components of the project include a 31.6 MCM dam and reservoir, a 1.3 MW mini hydropower plant, a 20 MW floating solar system, a 4,000 hectare irrigation scheme, and domestic and livestock water supply. The project is estimated to cost $132.15 million and would benefit over 270,000 people. Feasibility studies and designs have been completed and the project is economically and financially viable. Next steps include finalizing the bilateral agreement between Kenya and Uganda and engaging development partners for financing and implementation.

Small Hydro Power for Rural Development
Cecilia Ledesma is Senior Programme Officer at the International Center on Small Hydro Power (ICSHP). ICSHP, under auspices of United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and China's Ministry of Water Resources, promotes small hydro power development worldwide. Projects focus on training and capacity building to facilitate rural electrification and sustainable economic development in developing countries. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Environment, Economics and Politics (EEP) from Claremont McKenna College.
Cecilia presents a case study of using small hydro power, demonstrating how renewable energy is applicable and relevant for communities across different contexts – from rural mountainous communities in Pakistan, communities in the UK concerned about climate change, or reforestation efforts in China. Renewable energy is a powerful tool for global sustainable development. However, community initiative and engagement is key to project success.

The Akosombo Dam is a 660m long and 114m tall rock-fill embankment dam located on the Volta River in Ghana. Tidal energy
Tidal energy harnesses the kinetic energy of tides to generate electricity. Tides are caused by the gravitational forces of the moon and sun. There are two main methods to capture tidal energy - tidal barrages use dams and turbines to capture potential energy differences between high and low tides, while tidal stream generators use underwater turbines similar to wind turbines to capture the kinetic energy of moving water currents. India has an estimated potential of 8000 MW of power from tidal sources concentrated in the Gulf of Cambay and Gulf of Kutch. While tidal energy has advantages of being predictable, renewable and improving technologies are lowering costs, challenges include high initial costs and potential environmental impacts which require further study.

The Akosombo Dam is a 660m long and 114m tall rock-fill embankment dam located on the Volta River in Ghana. Its construction in the 1960s flooded part of the Volta River Basin and created Lake Volta, which is the world's largest man-made lake. The dam provides hydroelectric power to Ghana and neighboring countries, though initially much of its output went to power an aluminum company. While benefiting industries and development, it also displaced local communities who lived in the flooded areas.

Tidal energy harnesses the kinetic energy of tides to generate electricity. Tides are caused by the gravitational forces of the moon and sun. There are two main methods to capture tidal energy - tidal barrages use dams and turbines to capture potential energy differences between high and low tides, while tidal stream generators use underwater turbines similar to wind turbines to capture the kinetic energy of moving water currents. India has an estimated potential of 8000 MW of power from tidal sources concentrated in the Gulf of Cambay and Gulf of Kutch. While tidal energy has advantages of being predictable, renewable and improving technologies are lowering costs, challenges include high initial costs and potential environmental impacts which require further study.

population expansion, and economic progress, the effects on natural ecosystems are becoming
more evident. A crucial element of this impact is the alteration of vegetation cover, which plays a
significant role in maintaining the ecological equilibrium of our planet.Land serves as the foundation for all human activities and provides the necessary materials for
these activities. As the most crucial natural resource, its utilization by humans results in different
'Land uses,' which are determined by both human activities and the physical characteristics of the
land.
The utilization of land is impacted by human needs and environmental factors. In countries
like India, rapid population growth and the emphasis on extensive resource exploitation can lead
to significant land degradation, adversely affecting the region's land cover.
Therefore, human intervention has significantly influenced land use patterns over many
centuries, evolving its structure over time and space. In the present era, these changes have
accelerated due to factors such as agriculture and urbanization. Information regarding land use and
cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface,
providing crucial environmental data for scientific, resource management, policy purposes, and
diverse human activities.

Temple of Asclepius in Thrace. Excavation results
The temple and the sanctuary around were dedicated to Asklepios Zmidrenus. This name has been known since 1875 when an inscription dedicated to him was discovered in Rome. The inscription is dated in 227 AD and was left by soldiers originating from the city of Philippopolis (modern Plovdiv).
