MARKET UPDATES & STOCK RECOMMENDATION
Malaysia continues to be a significant player in the Islamic fund management industry, accounting for
about 25 per cent of Islamic assets under management (AUM) globally as at June 17 this year. The Finance
Ministry, in its Economic Report 2014-2015 released today, said on the domestic front, the Islamic AUM
accounted for some 16.9 per cent of the industry’s total AUM as of end-June this year. As of end-July this
year, the report said the total Net Asset Value (NAV) of Islamic unit trust funds stood at RM45.4 billion
and Islamic wholesale funds at RM17.5 billion.
Governments and multilateral development banks (MDS) need to seek innovative ways to finance
infrastructure-based projects in partnership with private entities to ensure a sustainable flow of funds to
meet the demand for financing. NThe Ministry of Finance, in its Economic Report 2014-2015 released
today, said the widening gap between demand and resources available for financing warrants a careful
assessment of current methods and practices employed in infrastructure financing. The report is issued in
conjunction with the tabling of the 2015 Budget today by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who is
also the Finance Minister.
Malaysia's manufacturing sector is expected to record better perfomance for 2014, with growth of 6.4
per cent vis-a-vis 3.5 per cent in 2013, buoyed by favourable domestic economic activity and recovery in
the external sector. This is supported by a stronger production sector, which rose 6.6 per cent during the
first seven months of 2014 compared with 3.5 per cent last year, driven by resilient domestic demand and
recovery in the external sector, says the Finance Ministry in the 2014/2015 Economic Report released
today. The report is issued in conjunction with the tabling of 2015 Budget today by Prime Minister Datuk
Seri Najib Razak, who is also Finance Minister.
The global shale gas and oil development can set a new order in oil trade worldwide in the near future,
according to the 2014/2015 Economic Report. Shale gas refers to natural gas that is trapped within shale
formations. Shales are fine-grained sedimentary rocks that can be rich sources of petroleum and natural
gas. The report is issued in conjunction with the tabling of the 2015 Budget in Parliament today by Prime
Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who is also Finance Minister.
The benchmark FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI closed sharply lower today in tandem with Asian equity markets
as overall sentiment remained weak due to global growth concerns. The key index settled 20.85 points or
1.14 per cent lower at 1,808.88 after moving between 1,808.09 and 1,822.92 throughout the day. Japan's
Nikkei 225 slid 1.15 per cent to 15,300.55, Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 1.90 per cent to 23,088.54 and
Singapore' Straits Times weakened 0.93 per cent to 3,229.08.
