➢ World No.1 sugar consumer India could be set to ramp up imports of the
sweetener as a sharp drop in international prices and a stronger rupee make
overseas purchases viable despite stiff duty charges. Increased appetite from
India, which typically churns out its own sugar to use in everything from
fizzy drinks to sticky snacks, could support benchmark global prices that
have been trading near their lowest in 16 months. However, it would
pressure Indian prices, potentially making it difficult for mills that process
sugar cane to pay farmers rates stipulated by the government. Dealers
estimate the cost of sweetener produced from raw sugar shipped in from
abroad, including the 40-percent import duty, is around 32,000 rupees
($496) per tone, around 8 percent cheaper than local sugar at 34,600 rupees.
A stronger rupee also makes the dollar-denominated price tag on overseas
cargoes more affordable for Indian mills. The rupee has risen more than 5
percent against the greenback so far this year. That comes after the
government in April allowed the duty-free import of 500,000 tones of sugar
to keep a lid on prices after local production fell by a fifth from a year
ago. "Right now refiners are processing duty-free imports. From the next
month they could start importing (duty-paid) sugar for local consumption,"
said a sugar miller based at Kolhapur in Maharashtra. He declined to be
identified as he was not authorized to speak with media.
➢ The government today decided not to hike prices of food grains sold under
the Food Law via ration shops for one more year. Under the National Food
Security Act (NFSA), which was passed in 2013 during the previous UPA
regime, there is a provision for revision of the issue prices of food grains
every three years. At present, the government supplies highly subsidized
food grains at Rs 1-3/kg to over 81 crore people in the country, costing the
exchequer about Rs 1.4 lakh crore annually. "Prime Minister Narendra
Modi has taken a historic decision to not to increase the issue prices of food
grains under NFSA for one more year.
➢ Coriander and turmeric prices rose by Rs 100 per quintal in the
national capital today in view of increased buying by retailers and
stockiest amid low stocks. Further, fall in supplies from producing belts
also supported the upside. Coriander and turmeric prices rose by Rs
100 each to conclude at Rs 5,900-12,100 and Rs 7,100-10,100 per
quintal, respectively. Buying support from retailers and stockiest
against fall in supplies from producing belts, mainly pushed up
coriander and turmeric prices.
➢ Guar gum prices spurted by Rs 94 to Rs 6,845 per quintal in futures
trading today largely on the back of fresh positions created by
participants due to pick-up in demand at existing levels at the physical
markets. Rise in guar gum prices in futures trade to raising of bets by
participants following a firm trend at the spot markets on the back of
rising export demand. At the National Commodity and Derivatives
Exchange, guar gum for delivery in July rose by Rs 94, or 1.39 per
cent, to Rs 6,845 per quintal, having an open interest of 33,510
lots. Guar gum for delivery in October also rallied by Rs 97, or 1.35 per
cent, to Rs 7,272 per quintal, in an open interest of 18,005 lots.
➢ Cotton output in India, the world’s biggest grower, may increase to
a three-year high as some farmers plant more of the fiber on better
returns compared to other crops. Production will probably climb to 37.5
million to 38 million bales in the harvesting season starting October 1,
from 34.1 million bales a year earlier if the monsoon is normal in main
growing areas, said Nayan Mirani, president of the Cotton Association
of India. That would mean the biggest crop since 2014-15, when the
harvest was 38.7 million bales, data from the association show. A bale
weighs 170 kilograms (375 pounds). A bigger Indian crop will add to
an expected decade-high harvest in the US, the top exporter, and a
forecast increase in output in Australia just as China continues to
unload inventories. That’s prompted global prices to drop 4.4 per cent
this year after climbing 12 per cent in 2016. In India, domestic prices
are still offering favorable returns for farmers.
