Daffodils
Robert Herrick
• An Anglican Priest, Cavalier Poet.
• An admirer of Ben Jonson
• Obedient to the king
• In 1648 he published his only book of
poem titled Hesperides. The Famous lines
of his poem run as,(Carpe Diem)
• “Gather ye rosebuds while ye may,
Old time is still a-flying.
And this same flower that smiles to-day
To-morrow will be dying.
The Poem.I
Fair Daffodils, we weep to see
You haste away so soon;
As yet the early-rising sun
Has not attain'd his noon.
Stay, stay,
Until the hasting day
Has run
But to the even-song;
And, having pray'd together, we
Will go with you along.
The Poem.II
We have short time to stay, as you,
We have as short a spring;
As quick a growth to meet decay,
As you, or anything.
We die
As your hours do, and dry
Away,
Like to the summer's rain;
Or as the pearls of morning's dew,
Ne'er to be found again.
The Theme of the Poem.
• The central theme :- Time.
• Carpe Diem :- Latin word, stands for the
idea - Seize the day!
• The lines from the poem such as,
We have short time to stay, as you,
We have as short a spring;
As quick a growth to meetdecay,
As you, or anything.
The Role of the Nature In The
Poem.
• In nature every thing is transitory.
• Be it is the object of the nature or lives of
human beings.
• The flower daffodil used as a symbol of
momentary existence of natural objects.
• The flowers have been used as the
analogy of temporariness of our existence.
• Our beautiful life is also like, Daffodils
withering at every moment.
THANK YOU.
