Trust is critical to the process of science. Two decades ago the Internet and World Wide Web fostered a new age in computational science with the emergence of accessible and high performance computing, storage, software, and networking. More recent paradigms, including virtual organizations, federated identity, big data, and global-scale operations continue to evolve the way computing for science is performed.
Advancing technologies, the need to coordinate across organizations and nations, and an evolving threat landscape are sources of ongoing challenges in maintaining the trustworthy nature of computational infrastructure and the science it supports. To address these challenges, a number of projects have focused on improving the cybersecurity and trustworthiness of scientific computing. Recent examples include the Center for Trustworthy Scientific Cyberinfrastructure funded by NSF, the Software Assurance Marketplace funded by DHS, and the Extreme Scale Identity Management for Science project funded by DOE.
This presentation will give a 20 year retrospective together with a vision for the future of cybersecurity for computational science. It will describe the state of trust and cybersecurity for scientific computing, its evolution over the past twenty years, challenges it is facing today, how the exemplar projects are addressing those challenges, and a vision of cybersecurity for research and higher education in general augmenting each other in the future.

This talk will showcase work done by the bioinformatics team at CSIRO in Sydney, Australia to make Spark more useful and usable for the bioinformatics community. They have created a custom library, variant-spark, which provides a DSL and also a custom implementation of Spark ML via random forests for genomic pipeline processing. We’ve created a demo, using their ‘Hipster-genome’ and a Databricks notebook to better explain their library to the world-wide bioinformatics community. This notebooks compares results with another popular genomics library (HAIL.io) as well.

Cybersecurity has long been an area of activity for those responsible for providing, protecting and supporting digital services in research and education, but recent events have focused public and media attention on the scale of the threat.
Our security thread at this year’s conference is picking up on some of these themes and we have sessions covering a number of cybersecurity areas. There will be presentations on organisation experiences of email phishing and the results of our RPZ trial. Accreditation of services is being requested more often by project funders and will have a case study presentation on experience of obtaining ISO27001.

Science Gateways and Their Tremendous Potential for Science and Engineering
This document discusses the potential of science gateways and their role in connecting scientists to shared computing resources. It notes that gateways provide intuitive interfaces to access advanced capabilities, allowing scientists to focus on their research without deep technical knowledge. However, gateways must be developed by experts and sustained over the long term to gain the trust of scientists and truly enable new forms of collaborative, data-driven research.
SGCI Science Gateways: Harnessing Big Data and Open Data 03-19-2017
The importance of Big Data and Open Data to achieve scientific advancements in precision medicine is beyond doubt and evident in many different projects and initiatives such as the Precision Medicine Initiative (All of Us), ICTBioMed, NCIP Hub, 100K Genomics England Project, NIH Cancer Moonshot, and the Million Veterans Program. In April 2013, McKinsey & Company proclaimed that Big Data has the ability to revolutionize pharmaceutical research and development within clinical environments, by using data for better informed decision making and targeting the diverse user roles including physicians, consumers, insurers, and regulators. Companies from a wide spectrum such as Oracle Health Sciences, Google, and Data4Cure build solutions that help address efficient and secure data sharing with the patient or clinician in mind. Open data can be maintained and shared by patient communities such as PatientsLikeMe.com and build an invaluable resource for further data mining.
Even with all these advances there are still challenges to address including a recent Precision Medicine World Conference announcement in November 2016: “We are missing easy-to-use solutions to share patient data.” Science gateways are a solution to fill the gap and help form by definition end-to-end solutions – web-based, mobile or desktop applications - that provide intuitive access to advanced resources and allow researchers to focus on tackling today’s challenging science questions. Science Gateways abstract the complex underlying computing and data infrastructure as far as feasible and desired by the stakeholder and can be tailored to different target groups with diverse backgrounds, demands, and technical knowledge.
Science Gateways have existed for over a decade and a wide variety of frameworks and APIs have been developed to support the efficient creation of science gateways and ease the implementation of connections to Cloud infrastructures and distributed data on a large scale. The importance of science gateways has been recognized by NSF by funding the creation of a Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI) to serve the community with free resources, services, experts, and ideas for creating and sustaining science gateways. To achieve this goal, the SGCI serves the community with five areas that have diverse foci and which also closely interact: Incubator, Extended Developer Support, Scientific Software Collaborative, Community Engagement and Exchange and Workforce Development.
The Institute is technology-agnostic and serves the community by offering a wide variety of services and using technologies that are the best fitting solution for the use case. Gateways allow for precision medicine to be more efficiently developed or adapted by lowering the barriers to data sharing and Big Data analysis.

Cybersecurity 101 for Ophthalmology & Physician Practices
With the transition from paper to electronic medical records, the threats and potential ramifications of network security risks to physician practices have skyrocketed. From liability for loss of patient data, to the rapidly emerging, office crippling threats of "Spear Phishing" attacks and "Ransomware," the likelihood of being affected is "when," not "if." This presentation includes an eye-opening primer of cybersecurity threats for small and medium sized practices and a roadmap to help protect patient records and practice viability.

About Ravi Goel
Ravi D. Goel graduated with a bachelor’s degree in ethics, politics, and economics from Yale University. He earned a medical degree from the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and completed an ophthalmology residency at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center. Dr. Goel is in private practice in Cherry Hill, NJ, and a clinical instructor at the Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia.
Dr. Goel is a past chair of the American Medical Association—Young Physicians Section. He is a recipient of the AMA Foundation Excellence in Medicine Leadership Award, the American Academy of Ophthalmology Achievement Award, and Secretariat Award. He is a past president of the New Jersey Academy of Ophthalmology.
He is a member of the AMA Ophthalmology Section Council. He is also a member of the New Jersey Governors School Board of Overseers, director of the American Academy of Ophthalmic Executives and a member of the Yale University Development Council.
A data view of the data science process

Cybersecurity 101 for Ophthalmology & Physician Practices
With the transition from paper to electronic medical records, the threats and potential ramifications of network security risks to physician practices have skyrocketed. From liability for loss of patient data, to the rapidly emerging, office crippling threats of "Spear Phishing" attacks and "Ransomware," the likelihood of being affected is "when," not "if." This presentation includes an eye-opening primer of cybersecurity threats for small and medium sized practices and a roadmap to help protect patient records and practice viability.

About Ravi Goel
Ravi D. Goel graduated with a bachelor’s degree in ethics, politics, and economics from Yale University. He earned a medical degree from the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and completed an ophthalmology residency at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center. Dr. Goel is in private practice in Cherry Hill, NJ, and a clinical instructor at the Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia.
Dr. Goel is a past chair of the American Medical Association—Young Physicians Section. He is a recipient of the AMA Foundation Excellence in Medicine Leadership Award, the American Academy of Ophthalmology Achievement Award, and Secretariat Award. He is a past president of the New Jersey Academy of Ophthalmology.
He is a member of the AMA Ophthalmology Section Council. He is also a member of the New Jersey Governors School Board of Overseers, director of the American Academy of Ophthalmic Executives and a member of the Yale University Development Council.
A data view of the data science process
This document discusses the need to study data science as a discipline through examining the processes, techniques, and outputs. It presents data science as consisting of iterative steps like forming hypotheses, collecting and analyzing data, and extracting results. Ontologies and platforms are proposed as tools to systematically describe datasets, licenses, models, and tasks. Case studies examine modeling data flows and understanding patterns in large data science systems. zkStudyClub - LatticeFold: A Lattice-based Folding Scheme and its Application...
Folding is a recent technique for building efficient recursive SNARKs. Several elegant folding protocols have been proposed, such as Nova, Supernova, Hypernova, Protostar, and others. However, all of them rely on an additively homomorphic commitment scheme based on discrete log, and are therefore not post-quantum secure. In this work we present LatticeFold, the first lattice-based folding protocol based on the Module SIS problem. This folding protocol naturally leads to an efficient recursive lattice-based SNARK and an efficient PCD scheme. LatticeFold supports folding low-degree relations, such as R1CS, as well as high-degree relations, such as CCS. The key challenge is to construct a secure folding protocol that works with the Ajtai commitment scheme. The difficulty, is ensuring that extracted witnesses are low norm through many rounds of folding. We present a novel technique using the sumcheck protocol to ensure that extracted witnesses are always low norm no matter how many rounds of folding are used. Our evaluation of the final proof system suggests that it is as performant as Hypernova, while providing post-quantum security.

Mutation Testing for Task-Oriented Chatbots
Conversational agents, or chatbots, are increasingly used to access all sorts of services using natural language. While open-domain chatbots - like ChatGPT - can converse on any topic, task-oriented chatbots - the focus of this paper - are designed for specific tasks, like booking a flight, obtaining customer support, or setting an appointment. Like any other software, task-oriented chatbots need to be properly tested, usually by defining and executing test scenarios (i.e., sequences of user-chatbot interactions). However, there is currently a lack of methods to quantify the completeness and strength of such test scenarios, which can lead to low-quality tests, and hence to buggy chatbots.
To fill this gap, we propose adapting mutation testing (MuT) for task-oriented chatbots. To this end, we introduce a set of mutation operators that emulate faults in chatbot designs, an architecture that enables MuT on chatbots built using heterogeneous technologies, and a practical realisation as an Eclipse plugin. Moreover, we evaluate the applicability, effectiveness and efficiency of our approach on open-source chatbots, with promising results.

High performance Serverless Java on AWS- GoTo Amsterdam 2024
Java is for many years one of the most popular programming languages, but it used to have hard times in the Serverless community. Java is known for its high cold start times and high memory footprint, comparing to other programming languages like Node.js and Python. In this talk I'll look at the general best practices and techniques we can use to decrease memory consumption, cold start times for Java Serverless development on AWS including GraalVM (Native Image) and AWS own offering SnapStart based on Firecracker microVM snapshot and restore and CRaC (Coordinated Restore at Checkpoint) runtime hooks. I'll also provide a lot of benchmarking on Lambda functions trying out various deployment package sizes, Lambda memory settings, Java compilation options and HTTP (a)synchronous clients and measure their impact on cold and warm start times.
