The Communication Workers Union held a successful protest action against retrenchments at the South African Broadcasting Corporation. The union thanked South Africans for supporting workers during the difficult times. While the issue may not be resolved, the union is happy with the success of the protest. They have been invited to meet with SABC on November 23rd to discuss alternatives to retrenchments and will provide an update after the meeting. The union will not participate in interviews with SABC as part of the industrial action.

CWU PRESS RELEASE
TO: ALL MEDIA HOUSES
FROM: COMMUNICATION WORKERS UNION
DATE: 22 NOVEMBER 2020
COMMUNICATION WORKERS UNION’S INDUSTRIAL ACTION AT SABC A SUCCESS
Communication Workers Union (CWU), would like to thank millions of South
Africans for showing solidarity with workers of SABC during these difficult
times. Since we have started at the beginning of the week with our protest
actions; various political parties, trade unions federations, civil society,
organised formations in the industry, fellow workers from other industries and
ordinary people of our country joined us at the picketing lines. We know very
well that it is not over and it may be far before it’s over, however we are happy
that our action can be coined as a successful protest. We are still calling on
workers of SABC; our members, non-union members, contractors, freelancers
and permanent workers to embark on the industrial action until our demands
are met. Those who are working are actually making it easier for management
to continue with their plans to retrench. We further salute our members and
workers who are on strike and encourage them to continue with the strike.
CWU has received a letter of invitation from SABC requesting to urgently meet
with the union to discuss the alternatives to retrenchments. We have
responded positively to the invite and the meeting will be sitting on Monday
the 23rd of November 2020. We will be giving feedback at the picketing lines
on Monday after the meeting. Furthermore, CWU will not be taking any
interviews with SABC radio or TV as part of our industrial action and we
expect those who would interviewing us to be on strike.
