O artigo propõe o debate a respeito dos vestígios arqueológicos pré-coloniais remanescentes
no município de Garopaba (SC), e suas possibilidades na promoção do desenvolvimento sustentável
por meio do turismo arqueológico. A partir de uma discussão teórica das dimensões política,
ideológica e econômica dos processos de patrimonialização e do entendimento das dimensões do
desenvolvimento sustentável apresentadas por Sachs, compreende-se o patrimônio cultural (e, por
extensão, o arqueológico) como componente fundamental para uma perspectiva de desenvolvimento
que não seja teleológica e economicista. É neste sentido que se apresenta a proposta do turismo
arqueológico, potencialmente capaz de contribuir para alternativas de trabalho e renda e para a
proteção e preservação dos sítios arqueológicos existentes na região.
