Doctorate Dissertation Abstract
Recently, stakeholders are consistently pressurizing manufacturers to integrate
sustainable manufacturing practices within their production process to protect triple bottom
line (i.e. economy, society and the environment) from the negative effects of the
manufacturing process. This adaptation caused technological and procedural shifts, and
significantly altered the work practices of workers at manufacturing plants. Many longitudinal
studies have already addressed the issue of sustainable manufacturing performance (SMP),
but very few cross sectional studies have focused on this subject. Mostly manufacturing
occurs as a result of workers interaction with technology. The system created with workers
technology interaction is known as socio-technical systems. Socio-technical systems form
three subsystems (social, environmental and technical subsystems) that provide basic rules to
work design practices. The current study aims to investigate the relationship of work practices
under the socio-technical subsystems with sustainable manufacturing and management
support. Also conditional moderating role of task interdependence was analyzed. The study
used quantitative research design and data was collected from 384 team leaders from
Malaysian large manufacturers using multistage sampling strategy. Further, this data
statistically tested using AMOS to investigate the relationships between management support,
work practices under social subsystems (employee empowerment, employee participation),
environmental subsystems (external environmental management, internal environmental
management, supply chain and logistics management), technical subsystem (total quality
management, total preventive maintenance, just in time management) and SMP. Results
indicated that management support is positively related with work practices under socio-
technical subsystems. However, management support does not influence the external
environmental management practices and TQM practice. Work practices under socio-
technical subsystems were positively related with SMP, but TQM and TPM practices were
not significantly related with SMP. Moreover, study confirms that task interdependence
moderates the mediation effect of social subsystems between the relationship of management
support and SMP. Precisely, results of the study implies that in those organizations where
management encourages employees to involve and participate in the decision making process
3. Page 3 of 12
regarding the environmental, social and economical performance of the manufacturing
process, employees are more concerned about the improvement of SMP.
