A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

I am an avid follower of the latest film releases and a fan of sports, gaming and reading. I am interested in journalism and have already gained experience in the field, which has helped improve my social and communication skills. I often have to prepare what to say beforehand, though I will commonly have to improvise and make up questions on the spot. Experience Though I am only seventeen and still studying at college I have had a small amount of media-related experience. I am currently studying BTEC Level 3 Media at Eccles Sixth Form Centre. The Centre is part of the larger Salford City College which has a sports reporter’s academy. Through the academy I have interviewed officials from the Manchester FA, ex-Preston Defender Ryan Kidd and attended the Paul Hunter Charity Golf Day along with a fellow student. The latter event involved me interviewing snooker players about the day and the Paul Hunter foundation. I interviewed the founder of the foundation as well as players Steve Davis, Ken Doherty and John Parrot among others. Being chosen for the event was a proud moment for me as I felt I was representing the college and to interview the players as a fan of the game was highly-inspiring for me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B36dnEB5EPM I am currently a Crew Member at The Reporters Academy, an organisation that teaches young people valuable skills in the media. The academy has helped me improve my skills as I have interviewed many people in my time there. I am currently writing a script for a new TV show, as we interviewed a TV producer who agreed to give me the opportunity to write the script. I am currently awaiting feedback, as there is only a small guarantee that it will be chosen. I did work experience when I was fourteen in the media department of Salford Red Devils. During my week there I assisted with small things and wrote a couple of articles for the club’s website. (I cannot attach a link as the pages have now been deleted). I have also wrote a column for the betting magazine Racing Ahead, which was around two years ago. It was approximately 500 words and I wrote about the most likely club to finish bottom of the Super League. I have also completed brief work in a supermarket, where I helped to pack bags to raise money for my local Scout group. This meant I had to talk to customers, which is something I enjoyed.
