Due to the costs of recovering from an earthquake and tsunami, Japan has decided to cut its official development assistance (ODA) to other countries. The Japanese government will decrease ODA funding by 50.1 billion yen (611.27 million USD) in fiscal year 2011, reducing totals from 572.7 billion yen to 522.6 billion yen. However, the foreign minister stated that cuts will aim to minimize adverse effects on aid activities and international commitments. While Vietnam may face some problems from the cuts, Japan needs funds to rebuild after the natural disasters.
