WHAT IS CULTURE SHOCK?
“The depression and anxiety experienced by many people when they
travel or move to a new social and cultural setting for a long term.”

Editor's Notes

  • #2 Have you ever moved abroad for more than 6 months? Maybe you are preparing for a job overseas? Or you already live and work in a different cultural environment and feel like an ‘alien’? Then you either have experienced or will experience CULTURE SHOCK Let me share what it means and how to master it
  • #3 I’m Marina Ibrahim and I have faced culture shock more than 7 times. German-Egyptian by birth, with a cosmopolitan career I lived in Germany, France, Egypt, Australia and now live & work as Culture Coach in the UK. I help leaders to communicate effectively and work productively across different cultures
  • #4 Culture is complex and to simplify we compare it with an iceberg: The smaller visible part is what you notice with your senses: the food, the sound, the way people dress or speak, their way of life. And then there is the ‘Titanic’ part
  • #5 Culture shock is (quote) “…the depression and anxiety experienced by many people when they move to a new cultural setting for a long term.” This is when we discover the hidden and bigger part of the iceberg: a collision between our own culture and that of the host country
  • #6 We experience culture shock as a learning process 1. where we develop strategies to survive and thrive in a new cultural environment that can neither be taught in a classroom nor on any training course
  • #7 Why does it matter? Well, it can happen to anyone anytime - willingly or unwillingly We are not always aware There is no true way to entirely prevent it, either From exception to default or norm
  • #8 VUCA (coined in 1987 by leadership thinkers Bennis & Nanus) is not a name for a cocktail 🤣 RIGHT NOW – we experience changes that affect all areas of our lives AND without even having to leave the country:
  • #9 Globalisation – digitisation – climate change – social media – economical – political shifts and transformations. VUCA – is short for the volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity in life! AND changes happen faster and more unpredictably
  • #10 With VUCA in mind we can see Culture Shock as a change process of 4 stages. It can last 6 months or longer, depending on personality, experience, motivation and resilience to stress: Honey Moon Stress stage Adjustment Mastery
  • #11 This is the fun stage.🤣Imagine your favourite holidays! You are excited about the new place, eager to explore and meet new people, Until ….. It hits you like in the Eagles song Hotel California: “You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave…”
  • #12 ”What have I done? I am so sad – I feel frustrated, homesick, lonely”. Everything is a chore, including simple day-to-day tasks at work and at home. You don’t understand them. No one understands you and you perceive everyone as being insensitive or unsympathetic
  • #13 “UHHHHH - It’s not that bad, I’m getting used to it” After 6 months, you become familiar and develop a routine. Everything begins to make sense, you know what to expect, and negative reactions and responses to the culture are reduced.
  • #14 “I love it here – I don’t want to go back home!” You start feeling like a local, like an insider: Having found friends and feeling connected you fully and comfortably integrated in the host culture.
  • #15 Can Culture Shock actually be good for you? (PAUSE) YES, because It makes you more tolerant  It makes you stronger It expands your social networks It can help you become smarter It provides you with new perspectives and ideas
  • #16 BUT (Pause) not everyone can bridge the gap There are the Rejecters who find adapting to a new culture difficult, and stay in their ‘expat bubbles’ HOWEVER (PAUSE) 2. The Adopters embrace their host culture and could stay forever 3. The Cosmopolitans manage to adapt positively creating their own blend between the host culture and their personality.
  • #17 THE SOLUTION? Use the honeymoon stage to Set yourself goals Keep active: Exercise, socialise and connect with locals Find mindful, relaxing and feel good activities to fight the blues Stay in touch with family and friends at home
  • #18 Finally: Equip yourself with Cultural Intelligence. Work with a Culture Coach that supports you in learning about Culture and GlobalDISC a valuable tool that empowers you to communicate effectively and work productively with people from other cultures through self-awareness and adaptation strategies
  • #19 Many people agree that stepping outside of your comfort zone opens doors to the most meaningful experiences in life.   Travelling and moving abroad is an excellent way to gain new ideas embrace new perspectives. And as VUCA and globalisation increase ….
  • #20 ….So will cultural interactions and the exposure to Culture Shock: Either at the experiencing end - or at the receiving end - or even both Offering help and support as well as Daring the unknown can make us become more open-minded and resilient to change
  • #21 Be proud – You just learned about the #1 adaptation skill in today’s global age!   Enjoy the ride!
