•Khattak dance
•Mashud attan
•Waziri dance
•Chitrali dance
•Ghummar and gatka popular dance of hazara division
Atthan dance
In this dance, the dancers perform to the beat of the music. It is
typically performed by men and women. It involves 2–5 steps,
ending with a clap given while facing the center, after which the
process is repeated. The hips and arms are put in a sequential
movement including left and right tilts, with the wrists twisting in
sequence. Ultimately a hand is projected outward and brought in a
'scoop-like' fashion towards the center where the other hand
meets it for a clap. This dance is typically performed with the
musician dictating the duration and speed.
Khattakdance
martial attan dance
usually performed
while carrying a
sword and a
handkerchief by the
tribesmen from the
agile Khattak tribe
of Pashtuns in Pakis
tan and some eastern
parts
of Afghanistan. It
was performed by
Khattak warriors
before going to wars
in the time of Malik
Shahbaz Khan
Khattak, and
then Khushal Khan
Mahsud Attan
This is a unique dance routine using
rifles performed by the Mahsud tribe of
Pashtuns in South Waziristan. Originally
it was performed at times of war, but
later became a cultural dance. The
dancers dance empty handed and require
only large drums. Nowadays it is
performed with guns in the dancers'
hands; loaded guns are taken in one
hand, and to the beat of the drum the
dancers move forward in a circle. After
taking two and a half steps, each dancer
turns about and cocks the gun. All the
dancers do this in a uniform manner,
and by completing the turning steps
they fire in the air simultaneously. The
sound of the guns seems to be a single
big bang.
Waziri dance
Waziristan, a region of Federally
Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan, is a
large area and has a particular Pashtun
culture. Two drummers and a flute player
play a particular tune. All the Wazirs stand
around them. Two people leave the circle,
go dancing towards the drummers, and
come back dancing in the same manner.
While performing, both people turn
around twice, once facing each other, and
once facing the opposite direction. After
doing this separately, they march while
dancing to the assembled crowd. As they
reach the circle, another pair of
performers move forward in the same
fashion.
music
Traditional Pashto music mostly classic
Gazals use following instruments:
o Rubab
o Tabla
o Sitar
o Harmonium
o Flute
Tappa
Tappa is one of the oldest and most popular genres of Pashto poetry
being used in Pashto new songs as well. It reflects all the human feelings
and aspirations with the beauty of its own.
Tappa is an unequal term of poetry where the first line is always shorter
than the following one. The singing of Tappa is very common among the
Pashto-speaking areas and you can listen to it in Pathan areas from a boy
way on his school, the elders in the Hujrahs and the women at home
alike.
Mostly, the Tappa is sung with traditional Pashto music instruments
Rubab, Mangai and Sitar. However, in Pashto new songs, it is being sung
with the full orchestra.
LOBA
Loba can also be occasionally sung with Tappa. It is
something like storytelling, look like the folk music. It
somehow is being used in Pashto new songs and music.
The singing of Loba requires two people, a man and a
woman as lover and beloved in which they reply each
other.
RUBAYI
You can say it a Pashto Ghazal because the formation of this
genre is very much alike of Ghazal. Therefore it is commonly
used in Pashto new songs or music which is same like Ghazal.
However, apart from Urdu Ghazal, Rubayi is heavily influenced
by Arabic, Persian and Turkish poetry.
Most famous poet in Pashto history is Rehman Baba, and his
Rubayi is very popular among the Pashto speakers
SHAAN
It is the song of happiness in Pashto music. Shaan
is mostly sung on marriages or other special
occasions or festivals. It is an important part of
Pashto new songs that are especially sung on the
happy occasions
Neemakai
Neemakai has many different forms and normally
women compose it. It is usually very short (1 to 3
lines). The first lines are repeated in the middle of
the song and Tappa is usually added according to
the subject and circumstances. Most of these
songs in Pashtoon culture have been expressed in
different areas about daily life and love.
