It depicts the different art culture we have in Nigeria right from civilization to date. The Nok Culture, Ife Art Culture, Esie Art Culture, Igboukwu Art Culture and the Tseode Art Culture are highlighted in the presentation.

4. NOK ART CULTURE
• Nok art culture is the oldest of all the art cultures in Nigeria. It is rich
historical and cultural background which makes it still relevant.
• Period: Nok art culture is dated conservatively to between 500BC an
200AD.
• Location: Nok art got its name from a small village ‘Nok’ near Jemma in
Kaduna state, which is close to Jos in Plateau state.
• Media used: Nok art works were executed from clay also known as
terracotta (baked clay).

6. CHARACTERISTICS OF NOK ART
• Nok sculptural figures are in terracotta (baked clay).
• Animal figures are more represented (details)than the human
figures.
• Terracotta human figures posses oval, cylindrical and spherical
shaped heads.
• Terracotta human figures posses perforated eye pupils, nostrils
and lips, triangular eyes and eyes equally in segment of a square.

7. CHARACTERISTICS OF NOK ART CONTD.
• Terracotta animals and human figures are free standing (three
dimensional).
• Terracotta human heads posses varying head dress well formed.

8. IFE ART CULTURE
• Ife art culture is believed to be the ancestral home of the
Yoruba’s, with the Ooni of Ife being a traditional ruler.
• Period: Ife traditional arts dated back to the 9th century AD or
900AD.
• Location: Ife art culture dominated the western part of Nigeria
precisely Osun state.
• Media used: Ife artworks were made from clay and metal.

10. CHARACTERISTICS OF IFE ART
• Sculptural works in animal form are only in terracotta (burnt clay).
• Ife figures posses scarification and are heavily beaded.
• Ife art is a court art like the art of Benin. The Ooni of Ife controlled the
arts and artists.
• Ife works are naturalistic in appearance.
• The hair and beard are not added in the modelled figure but rather
are shown with serial holes which probably act as channel for weaving
hairs to make it look real.

11. ESIE ART
• Period: The art tradition dated back to about 1100AD.
• Location: Esie is located in an Igbo mina Yoruba town, south east of Ilorin
and near Offa in Kwara state.
• Media used: The Esie figures were carved from soapstone.

• Esie men and women statues have beads, bracelets and anklets.
• Esie men and woman figures are seated on a stool.
• Esie men and women statues are semi naturalistic.
• All Esie figures have three horizontal straight lines between the eyes and
ear and some figures have vertical lines on the chin and a host of
scarification or straightened lines on the face

14. IGBO UKWU ART
• Period: Igboukwu art dates back to the 9th to 13th century AD.
• Location: Igboukwu is located in Anambra states.
• Media used: Bronze

16. CHARACTERISTICS OF IGBOUKWU ART
• Works of igboukwu were made from clay and metal, precisely
bronze.
• Igboukwu bronze works are naturalistic and symbolic.
• Bronze pendant represents a ram’s head.
• Bronze snail shell is precisely 20.1cm in length which is the shape
of a snail shell, a decorated vessel surmounted by a leopard.

17. TSEODE BRONZES/NUPE ART
• Tsoede art is basically all about monumental bronze figures. Tsoede is the son
to the Atta of Idahwho was banished from Idah. He later boarded a bronze
canoe and took some bronze works along. He travel edalong the river Nile in
search of the Nupe kingdom. He highlighted at three villages and kept bronze
works there namely Jebba and Tada in the Island of Giragi. The Tsoede
sculptural works in bronze are seated human figures, bronze animal figures
like ostriches and elephant and are equally figures that are naturalistic .Most
of the figures are meant for fertility.
• PERIOD: Bronze works dated back to 13th and 14th century AD and flourished
around 1100 AD.
• LOCATION: Nupe is located around the middle belt of Nigeria. Bronze works
of art were found in the Tada and Jebbavillage in the present Kogi State of
Nigeria.

• The seated Tada bronze figure possesses broken arms and leg.
• The standing Tada bronze figure possesses a complex dress and a
disc.
• Animal and human figures of Tada are naturalistic and symbolic.
• Works of Tada are formed in bronze.
