The Second Crusade took place from 1145-1149 in response to the loss of the County of Edessa to Zengi's forces. It was fought by armies from the Kingdom of Jerusalem, the Knights Templar, the Knights Hospitaller, the kingdoms of France, Flanders, Montferrat, Savoy, Bar, Auvergne, Leon, Lorraine, Burgundy, Brittany, Aquitaine, and Provence. The crusaders launched from Europe, traveling through Germany and France before reaching Jerusalem. They attempted a siege of Damascus but were ultimately defeated, causing distrust between Christian forces for a generation. Some new arts and methods were discovered through interactions between countries.
