The Crowsnest Fire in 2003 burned 20,000 hectares of forest over 6 km long and 50 m high with the energy equivalent of an atomic explosion every 30 minutes. While it hurt some local industries like timber, tourism and businesses, it also created new diversity in the undergrowth and positively impacted Spray Lake Sawmills who were able to salvage and use some of the burnt lumber. However, only 28% of the burnt lumber could be salvaged and it was costly with burnt bark having no use and many organisms being lost.
