Crowdfunding has emerged as a new source of funding for energy projects since the financial crisis, and is well-suited to help finance the transformation of the energy sector towards smaller, decentralized, and lower carbon systems. Crowdfunding for energy projects began in 2012 and has grown significantly, with over 390 projects raising over 165 million Euros to date. While many early projects were small, community-based initiatives, the crowdfunding energy sector is showing signs of scaling up, with larger projects and increased participation of institutional investors and financing structures.
