Provocations of European Ethnology
AT A SPECIAL WORKSHOP held in the fall of 1994, we
gathered to discuss the rapid growth of interest in Euro-
pean ethnography and ethnology, especially since the
foundation of the Society for the Anthropology of
Europe in 1986, and its implications for the larger devel-
opment of anthropological theory.1 After the delibera-
tions, each of us developed the position paper originally
formulated for that initial encounter. The texts that fol-
low are the result. They claim neither thematic nor theo-
retical unity, but they do suggest that the refocusing of
anthropological interest on one of the discipline's cul-
tural contexts of emergence, coupled with the geopoliti-
cal shifts of the past decade, may have contributed to a
reconsideration of the role of social and cultural anthro-
pology in the formulation of a social theory. In one
sense the "anthropologizing" of Europe was a necessary
methodological counterpart to the dethronement of
Europe as the fount of all wisdom. But what, for those
who still (or for the first time) claim it as their identity
and home, is Europe? We offer these brief ruminations

Putting Mano to Music: The Mediation
of Race in Brazilian Rap
Derek Pardue
In this article I demonstrate how Brazilian hip-hop participants mediate marginality
through discourses and practices of n?gritude. By taking a historical approach, I analyse
the competitive processes with which S?o Paulo hip-hoppers articulate sound and story
to a dynamic sense of personhood and social collectivity. The article contributes to
general theories of music and identity as well as to the present literature on the
"reterritorialization" of hip-hop culture throughout the contemporary world.

Provocations of European Ethnology
AT A SPECIAL WORKSHOP held in the fall of 1994, we
gathered to discuss the rapid growth of interest in Euro-
pean ethnography and ethnology, especially since the
foundation of the Society for the Anthropology of
Europe in 1986, and its implications for the larger devel-
opment of anthropological theory.1 After the delibera-
tions, each of us developed the position paper originally
formulated for that initial encounter. The texts that fol-
low are the result. They claim neither thematic nor theo-
retical unity, but they do suggest that the refocusing of
anthropological interest on one of the discipline's cul-
tural contexts of emergence, coupled with the geopoliti-
cal shifts of the past decade, may have contributed to a
reconsideration of the role of social and cultural anthro-
pology in the formulation of a social theory. In one
sense the "anthropologizing" of Europe was a necessary
methodological counterpart to the dethronement of
Europe as the fount of all wisdom. But what, for those
who still (or for the first time) claim it as their identity
and home, is Europe? We offer these brief ruminations

Putting Mano to Music: The Mediation
of Race in Brazilian Rap
Derek Pardue
In this article I demonstrate how Brazilian hip-hop participants mediate marginality
through discourses and practices of n?gritude. By taking a historical approach, I analyse
the competitive processes with which S?o Paulo hip-hoppers articulate sound and story
to a dynamic sense of personhood and social collectivity. The article contributes to
general theories of music and identity as well as to the present literature on the
"reterritorialization" of hip-hop culture throughout the contemporary world.

Selection of Corpus 2: COMPILATION OF AN ANCHOR TERMS’ LIST (1) “ ANCHOR TERMS”’ list according to the 4 thematic areas which were deemed more problematic by the official censors: SEXUAL MORALS, POLITICAL OPINIONS, IMPROPER LANGUAGE AND RELIGION. Some considerations when compiling the list: -the list contains both negative and positive terms in a kind of dychotomy of the type: “negative term/positive use” and “positive term/negative use" -some of the terms are only taken into account when taken to the extreme due to the time we are already in, such as, e.g. “kiss/beso”

Selection of Corpus 2: COMPILATION OF AN ANCHOR TERMS’ LIST (2) Two procedures have been followed in order to avoid unnecessary repetitions in the list: -“truncation” or cutting of the term at its lexical root has been used when possible. Thus, in the case of terms such as “ban*/prohibi*” in the politics section we are both referring to the verb in its infinitive form (and conjugated) and to the noun, and the same is true for the Spanish term (prohibir, prohibición, prohibido). -compound forms which don’t answer to truncation are not included but they will be provided by the search tool. E.g.: "shit/mierda”; “bullshit” will also be spotted.
