Alexander the Great admired Diogenes' simple, free life without possessions despite having wealth and power. Modern marketing tries to equate products and material things with happiness, but this causes people to hoard stuff and tie their identity to objects. True happiness comes from being in control of oneself, as Diogenes understood. Decluttering by organizing one's surroundings can help sort out emotional baggage and inner feelings. The author has started decluttering and getting rid of meaningless things they have accumulated.

1. It´s Never too Late to Mend
“If I were not Alexander the Great, I would like to be Diogenes”. This quote still
remains quite baffling to this date. Alexander the Great, a man who had all the riches
and power he could ever wished for, desired to live like a man who apparently had
nothing. Although Alexander had what we consider the tools to live a “happy life” only
Diogenes lived one, as he was truly free.
Nowadays marketing´s main focus is to sell the products as a form of happiness. Due to
this, we are constantly hoarding stuff and giving it a sentimental value. This is where
the problem arises because once you tie emotional, significant memories to an object, it
becomes a part of your identity that is difficult to discard. For Diogenes the material
things carried little value on their own, it was the ability to be on control of oneself that
truly led to happiness.
Therefore, decluttering is the right way to go. And this path starts with organisation, as
this is the way we externalise our inner feelings. Emotional baggage tends to
accumulate until it explodes, expressing itself in different forms, one of them being
disorganisation. Thus, a great way to sort out our problems is to first exteriorise it by
organising our surroundings.
I had previously been accumulating meaningless stuff, but due to the recent events I
have turned a new leaf. Now, I won't go to the lengths of Diogenes but I do think that
every once in a while it is convenient to get rid of the things you don't need.
