1. Creative Methods:
Circling the Self Through Three Media
This method achieves receptivity to the creative self by “drawing out” an image, object and idea
through through three media: clay, circular [mandala] drawing; and writing - to arrive at content
that is both meaningful to the individual and the community at large. Both clay and mandala
drawing are “safe” processes for those who are afraid of expression in general and drawing in
particular. The key is the reflective piece that creates meaning that can be shared through
articulation of the process in words.

Artmaking Can be Therapeutic
and Healing
Artmaking can be therapeutic and healing
when approached in a way that is as much
about “self-formation” as the formation of
images and objects as works of art.
Individuals willing to explore their sens-
es, feelings, and insights through hands-
on visual/tactile media and writing with
intention, can open to an art experience
that is inherently therapeutic and revital-
izing, creatively playful and aesthetically
meaningful.

Creative Methods: Artmaking with Intention
I inadvertantly discovered the importance of art as healing during my studies in art education
at Vermont College from 2002 –2005. I undertook studio art studies to explore the creative
process and employed a method centered on the use of circular “mandala” drawing and clay
to bring what was in the dark, to the light. The key was to “realize” what I knew from the
process, through reflection and articulation in words. My intention was to experience “whole
ness” and I fulfilled the intention and discovered a method of creating that feels healing,
therapuetic and can be shared.
