The playwright uses his work to portray various issues that exist among relationships,
which often result in negative relations and hatred. In his play, Euripides brings out the dark side
of relationships, and how people end up committing crimes because of their disappointments and
dissatisfaction. Through his work, Euripides illustrates that people tend to compromise their

morals when they seek power and revenge. The play is classified as a tragedy because of the
unanticipated events that ensure in the course of the story.
The first theme that is evident in the play is betrayal. When Jason decides to pursue his
political ambition, he opts to marry Glauke, a royal daughter and betrays his wife, Medea with
whom he had children. The theme of betrayal is more pronounced due to the fact that the reason
why Jason left his wife was to get some political leverage. In this way, Jason is insensitive of the
potential c0onsequences his decision would have to his marriage as all he wanted was to achieve
his political ambition. As a result, he ends up breaking his marriage ties, which develops
bitterness in Medea’s heart, prompting her to seek revenge against her husband.
The playwright also uses the theme of crime to advance his ideas and achieve the script
of his work. Due to her frustrations, Medea kills her own children as a way of punishing her
husband. In her understanding, the most appropriate way through which Jason would regret
deserting her was to murder her loved ones. On the same note, Medea also kills Glauke, Jason’s
suitor as well as her father through poison. The murder was a way of eliminating Glauke so that
Jason does not end up marrying her. As such, Medea is portrayed as an overly jealous woman
who resolves in criminal methods to satisfy her hatred for Jason and Glauke.
Euripides successfully accomplishes his work and justifies his classification of the play as
a tragedy. The mysterious killings that are done by Medea is evidence that a little problem van be
amplified and transformed in a much bigger problem because of the lack of understanding and
the determination to revenge. Besides, the playwright portrays magic powers as a strong force in
society that can be used to punish targeted individuals. For instance, Medea’s crimes go
unpunished, despite confessing that she is the one who was responsible for the deaths. In a
