Gutenberg brings a powerful block editing experience with several default blocks but sometimes we may need to create custom ones. Creating Gutenberg blocks can be a challenging task as it involves writing a lot of code, even for creating a simple testimonial block. Since the process of learning JavaScript and React can be time-consuming, many developers find creating custom blocks quite complicated. Do I really need to learn JavaScript deeply to build blocks? Is there a quicker and simpler way? Well, this is where Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) come to the rescue. Through these slides, Imran will demonstrate how ACF blocks feature would help you create blocks in a very simple way.

Demystifying Gutenberg Blocks - Understanding the first steps to becoming a G...Cory Webb
How to even begin? What would I even create? And what tools should I use to create it? For a developer who hasn’t spent much time with JavaScript beyond tweaking a few jQuery scripts, approaching Gutenberg development can feel like an impenetrable fortress reserved for only the best and brightest frontend engineers. The barriers to entry are increasingly daunting, with tools like React, JSX, Node, NPM, and Webpack evolving faster than ever.
But it doesn’t have to be intimidating. Cory Webb guides you through the maze as he breaks down Gutenberg to make it easier than ever to start developing custom blocks for your clients.
Gutenberg is coming soon to a WordPress site near you. Are you ready? The new visual editor opens up a whole new world of possibilities to enhance the editorial experience for content creators, and developers like you have an opportunity to create the next generation of tools for WordPress. In this session, we will cover the basics of setting up your development environment, importing core components, and creating your very first custom Gutenberg block.
Knockout is a JavaScript library that helps you to create rich, responsive display and editor user interfaces with a clean underlying data model. Any time you have sections of UI that update dynamically (e.g., changing depending on the user’s actions or when an external data source changes), KO can help you implement it more simply and maintainably.
KO provides a complementary, high-level way to link a data model to a UI.

Your Future HTML: The Evolution of Site Design with Web ComponentsKen Tabor
This talk is dedicated to helping you understand how you can easily build reusable pieces of user interface while assembling your overall experience. Specifically the emerging technology of web components is introduced as the way you can package your HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to produce drop-in solutions. It’s like building UI elements and widget controls for the web.
By using this tactic to architect your sites you’ll reduce time, and increase quality, of the work your development team produces. See how designers and developers will use the deep functionality web components offer. Make custom HTML tags backed by the necessary markup, style, and code. This unique bundle mixes presentation with behavior creating rich and flexible micro-interactions.
I’ll review how the popular browser makers are implementing this emerging technology on desktop and mobile. I’ll introduce Google’s Polymer library as a way you can use web components now while platform owners are in the process of supporting the proposed standard.

Over the past several years, as the role of the browser has grown, rich desktop-like apps have emerged built entirely in the browser. To enable this movement, a new generation of powerful JavaScript frameworks have emerged including EmberJS, AngularJS, BackboneJS, and React. In this 30 minute crash course on front end frameworks, Bloc co-founder and CTO Dave Paola will cover the history of front end web development, the recent emergence of these new Javascript frameworks, and go over some of the pros and cons for learning them.
We'll hear from Bloc co-founder and CTO Dave Paola and Bloc Developer Christian Schlensker. Prior to Bloc, Dave was a developer at Kontagent, has over 15 years of software development experience, and has founded numerous other companies. Christian comes to Bloc from Pinchit and TAG where he was a developer. Prior to that, Christian was also a graphic designer.
In our experience, beginners are often overwhelmed by buzz words like "HTML5," "JavaScript," and "Ruby." Without an experienced guide, they can spend months going down rabbit-holes drilling into specific languages, and emerge frustrated that they can't build a real website. Dave will start by helping you visualize the front end web development landscape.

Exposing novice users to the Drupal (7 or 8) block admin interface is problematic yet those users still need to be able to edit block content. This presentation proposes a solution I call "snippets" that allows content editors to edit every little bit of content on their site without them needing access to the block admin interface. It provides a much more intuitive user experience.

Using Node and Grunt to create an awesome workflowVernon Kesner
At Ally, we used Node.js along with Grunt, Yo and Bower to develop a custom developer toolset for Ally's front-end development teams. The toolset had to be crafted in a way that allowed us to take a forward approach while still supporting the use of some legacy code and not-so legacy code. In the end, we created a toolset that separated new and on-going development tasks, gave living documentation and usage examples, and also allowed us to focus on maintainable and testable code. In this talk, you will get an overview about problems we tackled as well as solutions we found and approaches to creating a more maintainable codebase.

Fastest Way Of Creating Gutenberg Blocks With Minimal JavaScript Knowledge ...Imran Sayed
Pop-Up Livestream 22nd Feb 2020
Adapting to Gutenberg could be challenging for PHP developers who have minimal knowledge of JavaScript and React. It’s a paradigm shift and to re-learn how to do what we did with PHP in JavaScript can be overwhelming. You will know about how a php developer, with minimal js knowledge, can build blocks quickly.
How can the php developers survive the amount of technologies to be learnt for Gutenberg? Can creating a custom block be as easy as running a couple of simple commands?
You will know about my personal experiences that helped me build blocks quickly and allowed my clients to migrate to WordPress site, with the power of Gutenberg. ServerSideRender component can simplify creating the editor representation for dynamic blocks. My talk will show how the wp-cli and dynamic blocks can help anyone who wants to create reusable blocks quickly with minimal JavaScript.

In the beginning, progressive enhancement was simple: HTML layered with CSS layered with JavaScript. That worked fine when there were two browsers, but in today's world of multiple devices and multiple browsers, it's time for a progressive enhancement reboot. At the core is the understanding that the web is not print - the same rules don't apply. As developers and consumers we've been fooled into thinking about print paradigms for too long. In this talk, you'll learn just how different the web is and how the evolution of progressive enhancement can lead to better user experiences as well as happier developers and users.
This deck is a conference-agnostic one, suitable to be shown anywhere without site-specific jokes!

However, when was the last time we worked on improving our debugging skills?
This is one of the rarely discussed topics.
So let’s spend some time in improving our debugging skills, that can help us make it simpler to quickly find and fix critical bugs, so that we can deliver to ever-shortening deadlines and boosts overall productivity.

Why progressive web apps for word press wc-ahemdabadImran Sayed
Progressive Web App is a hot topic on the web right now.
As per recent studies ( Comscore ), users spend more time ( 87% ) on the native app compared to the mobile web because native apps are more predictable, they work offline, show notifications and have access to mobile sensors.
However, 78% of the time is spent in the user’s top 3 apps, and the rest of the apps just sit there and eat up the memory.
Mobile web, on the other hand, has a better reach ( 100 visits/ month for an average user ) but does not does have a native-like experience.
Through this slide you will learn, how we can combine the capabilities of native apps and the reach of the web, to get the best of both worlds, using Progressive Web Apps with WordPress.
According to skilled.co 47% of customers expect a webpage to load in 2 seconds or less before they consider leaving.
This means low speed kills and we need an app that is performant.
You will learn about my experiences in building a Progressive Web App with WordPress, that earns a place on the user’s home screen, works offline, sync in the background and bring the user back with push notification.
A few lessons and tips will be shared for anyone who wants to build a new Progressive Web App with WordPress or convert their existing WordPress site into a PWA and give their users a fast, reliable and engaging experience.

First Steps with Globus Compute Multi-User EndpointsGlobus
In this presentation we will share our experiences around getting started with the Globus Compute multi-user endpoint. Working with the Pharmacology group at the University of Auckland, we have previously written an application using Globus Compute that can offload computationally expensive steps in the researcher's workflows, which they wish to manage from their familiar Windows environments, onto the NeSI (New Zealand eScience Infrastructure) cluster. Some of the challenges we have encountered were that each researcher had to set up and manage their own single-user globus compute endpoint and that the workloads had varying resource requirements (CPUs, memory and wall time) between different runs. We hope that the multi-user endpoint will help to address these challenges and share an update on our progress here.

How to Position Your Globus Data Portal for Success Ten Good PracticesGlobus
Science gateways allow science and engineering communities to access shared data, software, computing services, and instruments. Science gateways have gained a lot of traction in the last twenty years, as evidenced by projects such as the Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI) and the Center of Excellence on Science Gateways (SGX3) in the US, The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) and its platforms in Australia, and the projects around Virtual Research Environments in Europe. A few mature frameworks have evolved with their different strengths and foci and have been taken up by a larger community such as the Globus Data Portal, Hubzero, Tapis, and Galaxy. However, even when gateways are built on successful frameworks, they continue to face the challenges of ongoing maintenance costs and how to meet the ever-expanding needs of the community they serve with enhanced features. It is not uncommon that gateways with compelling use cases are nonetheless unable to get past the prototype phase and become a full production service, or if they do, they don't survive more than a couple of years. While there is no guaranteed pathway to success, it seems likely that for any gateway there is a need for a strong community and/or solid funding streams to create and sustain its success. With over twenty years of examples to draw from, this presentation goes into detail for ten factors common to successful and enduring gateways that effectively serve as best practices for any new or developing gateway.
Providing Globus Services to Users of JASMIN for Environmental Data AnalysisGlobus
JASMIN is the UK’s high-performance data analysis platform for environmental science, operated by STFC on behalf of the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). In addition to its role in hosting the CEDA Archive (NERC’s long-term repository for climate, atmospheric science & Earth observation data in the UK), JASMIN provides a collaborative platform to a community of around 2,000 scientists in the UK and beyond, providing nearly 400 environmental science projects with working space, compute resources and tools to facilitate their work. High-performance data transfer into and out of JASMIN has always been a key feature, with many scientists bringing model outputs from supercomputers elsewhere in the UK, to analyse against observational or other model data in the CEDA Archive. A growing number of JASMIN users are now realising the benefits of using the Globus service to provide reliable and efficient data movement and other tasks in this and other contexts. Further use cases involve long-distance (intercontinental) transfers to and from JASMIN, and collecting results from a mobile atmospheric radar system, pushing data to JASMIN via a lightweight Globus deployment. We provide details of how Globus fits into our current infrastructure, our experience of the recent migration to GCSv5.4, and of our interest in developing use of the wider ecosystem of Globus services for the benefit of our user community.
Modern design is crucial in today's digital environment, and this is especially true for SharePoint intranets. The design of these digital hubs is critical to user engagement and productivity enhancement. They are the cornerstone of internal collaboration and interaction within enterprises.
Globus Compute wth IRI Workflows - GlobusWorld 2024Globus
As part of the DOE Integrated Research Infrastructure (IRI) program, NERSC at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab and ALCF at Argonne National Lab are working closely with General Atomics on accelerating the computing requirements of the DIII-D experiment. As part of the work the team is investigating ways to speedup the time to solution for many different parts of the DIII-D workflow including how they run jobs on HPC systems. One of these routes is looking at Globus Compute as a way to replace the current method for managing tasks and we describe a brief proof of concept showing how Globus Compute could help to schedule jobs and be a tool to connect compute at different facilities.
