11. Challenges Images Slide projectors become obsolete. Huge library of legacy slides. Only 1 room on can effectively use slides in the manner art history instructors are accustomed to.
12. Challenges Audio and Video Much of the material we have is either copyright or sensitive/personal and must be secured. Instructors should be able to prepare their own material without an technical engineer present. How can we best capitalize of use of university resources such as disk space and bandwidth?
13. Challenges Other Digital Objects Instructors want to include personal images and videos in their collections. They also want to have the ability to generate “text slides” to place at appropriate points within their collections.
14. Solutions We need to… Digitize all slides for online access. Allow experts and curators full control over object metadata records. Expand from images to include audio, video, generated text slides, user contributed materials. Allow *any* metadata schema.
15. Solutions We need to… Build systems to catalog, manage, and present these digital objects. Build a set of presentation, personal management, and study tools into the system. Empower users to perform all actions without the need for technical expertise.
19. Demonstrations Let’s have a look at… The CourseMedia™ Video Clip Editor! The CourseMedia™ Integrated Media Viewer! The CourseMedia™ Projection System!
20. Benefits Flash Platform Runtimes Tools are reliant on the Flash Platform runtimes only – no need for any specific browser. Since it is based on Flash technology, is totally cross-browser and cross-platform. Saves a lot of testing time! Flash capabilities go far beyond even what is offered by the newest, cutting-edge browsers.
21. Benefits Flash Platform Runtimes AIR allows extended capabilities beyond simple web browser implementations. This includes interaction with computer hardware and direct access to the file system and native system processes.
22. Benefits Flash Media Server Protects the materials which have copyright associations. Provides a way for us to even protect image materials. Though not streamed over RTMP – we can use FMS settings to restrict domains and such.
23. Benefits Flash Media Server Streams are delivered quickly and with little buffering or fuss. Video clips created by users do not replicate file segments and increase storage needs. It is all just metadata!
24. Benefits Instructors No need to schedule time at a slide library. They can manage all their assets from the office, their home, or wherever. Enhanced presentation tools like the CourseMedia™ Projection System allow total control over the material for classroom lectures. Instructors are encouraged to share and reuse collections and individual objects, reducing course preparation time.
25. Benefits Students Students can access materials for study anytime they want – any place they have Internet access. Currently looking into the development of study tools using the Flash CS5 Packager for iPhone and AIR 2.5 for Android. Also provides a way for students to organize personal collection which carry over across classes.
26. Benefits Staff Most all of the management can be handled by system users as they have been empowered to deal with their own materials. Less time managing servers and such. Everything is handled by the system. No hand-holding! Users can easily learn and use the system to do all sorts of stuff at their leisure.
27. Statistics As of Summer Quarter 2010: ALORA holds 56,000+ fully cataloged objects. Used by 800+ classes and 14000+ students over the past 4 years. Fall Quarter 2010: 200+ courses 4,500+ users
