Craiova is Romania's 6th largest city and the capital of Dolj County. It is located near the east bank of the river Jiu in central Oltenia, situated at equal distances from the Southern Carpathians and the River Danube. Craiova is the main commercial center west of Bucharest and the most important city in the region of Oltenia. The city has prospered as a regional trading center despite facing disasters like an earthquake in 1790, a plague in 1795, and a Turkish assault in 1802 that burned the city. Craiova administers eight surrounding villages that were formerly an independent commune until being merged into the city in 1996.
