Unproductive employees can cause problems in a workplace. When management fails to hold employees accountable and enforce policies, resentment can grow as some workers put in more effort than others. To address dysfunction, management must recognize the signs and devise a corrective plan, which may include hiring a conflict resolution professional. The document then provides contact information for Keisha Stoute, a conflict resolution strategist and mediator who helps individuals and organizations resolve conflicts and accomplish goals.
Brian Scudamore started 1-800-GOT-JUNK? in 1989 with $700 and a pickup truck. He had a vision of creating the "FedEx" of junk removal. The company now has 95 franchise partners across North America in 47 of the top 50 cities. Scudamore hired his first employee immediately instead of outsourcing, believing in investing in employees over contractors. He grew the business through franchising without needing outside funding. By centralizing phone booking and using a proprietary intranet system, the company distinguished itself and allowed rapid growth to $32 million in revenue by 2004 while retaining 100% ownership.

Fraud seems to be increasing, especially by powerful and wealthy individuals. Many large fraud cases have involved high-level executives, both globally and in India. While common people work hard and honestly despite difficulties, those with money and power are more likely to commit fraud due to greed for more influence, wealth, or fame. When fraud occurs at high levels, it often impacts many innocent people as honest employees can lose their jobs or face harassment. Ultimately, taxpayers often bear the costs when companies fail due to executive fraud. Stronger checks and balances are needed to curb fraud by top managers, but honest executives often remain silent out of not wanting to confront peers. Unless those with power to stop fraud take action
This document compares and contrasts a family business entity with a professional business entity. A family business has more centralized decision-making, focuses on specific products, and has clear ownership. It is tightly run and controlled. A professional business has more decentralized decision-making, focuses on turnover rather than specific products, and is loosely held without clear ownership. It lacks the tight control and sense of ownership of a family business. The document discusses the board structures, philosophies, and information sharing practices of family-owned Godrej and professionally-managed Larsen & Toubro to illustrate these differences.

- Few family firms survive beyond the first generation, with only 30% making it to the second generation, 12% to the third generation, and 3% to the fourth generation.
- The two main issues that curtail the longevity of family firms are succession planning and governance. This includes not having the right leadership in place to take over, family disputes over control, and an unwillingness to bring in outside talent.
- Some successful family businesses that have endured for multiple generations, like Booths supermarket and Wadi Group, have addressed this by professionalizing management structures, establishing family councils, and requiring family members to gain outside
The document discusses how Canada's national brand is an underutilized asset that Canadian companies could leverage more when competing globally. It notes that only 23% of Canadian trade is outside of the US and many mid-sized Canadian companies are not operating internationally. Canadian businesses are encouraged to learn from these companies and better promote their own operations under the respected Canada brand.
