The document discusses several pictures and album covers that the author likes. For the first picture, they like that it is an action shot from a low angle that uses lighting and shadowing effectively. They state the second cover has complimentary colors laid out simply like magazine covers. The third picture grabs their attention with a strong low angle pose and good use of lighting and coloring. The final cover contrasts with the previous one by being simpler with well-contrasting colors and a cracked masthead symbolic of alternative rock music.
The document describes editing a photo taken at Salford Quays on a gloomy day to make it seem like it was taken on a sunny morning. The edits included adding a curve effect to darken the sky and water, applying a warm orange filter to change the sky color, and using a lens flare effect to give the illusion of sunlight. These edits made the photo look more vibrant and appealing.

This document contains feedback on a photograph of London across the Thames River. The feedback indicates that the photograph advertises London by showing a clear view of the river, though it lacks a compelling vision. Respondents enjoyed the coloring style and contrast between green and pink tones that blended well. However, some felt the street light was too bright and that the jetty in the center looked out of place, and there was no single focal point to the image.
This document provides descriptions of 8 potential background images for a student magazine. The images include a plain wall, an art drawing, a brick wall, a chill out area, a drama room, a theatre hall, and a library. For most images, the document notes that fading out or simplifying busy backgrounds would help the main image stand out more. The plain wall, brick wall, and theatre hall are suggested to provide plain backgrounds that allow a main image to stand out.

Northwood Park and Northwood House are located near a school in Cowes, England. Northwood House is an old, large manor house surrounded by gardens and trees. Northwood Park has many trees and some open spaces, as well as a church. The area is quiet, peaceful, and often used for dog walking. Several photos of the area are provided that demonstrate good composition, including clear subjects, rule of thirds placement, framing, leading lines, and contrast. The photos show details like decay, age, and texture that represent the history of the local buildings and landscape.
This document summarizes and evaluates a series of experimental photography projects. In the first project, the photographer created a photomontage of a college building using disrupted structural elements and different angles. They were pleased with how the strong lines and mismatched alignments added complexity. In subsequent projects, the photographer continued experimenting with photomontage techniques, manipulating photos in Photoshop and including human subjects to represent the urban environment theme. Across projects, they found the surreal effects of disrupted lines and angles to be aesthetically interesting but sought to improve inclusion of subjects and balancing post-production adjustments.
This document discusses and analyzes several photographs based on composition rules and how they could be improved. It provides examples of good composition that follow rules like the rule of thirds and simplicity. Areas for improvement are identified, such as images being too cluttered, blurred, or not having a clear focal point. Cropping is suggested to simplify images and focus attention on the main subject.
This document contains 6 analyses of photographs taken by the author. Each analysis discusses elements of the photo such as lines, shapes, color, lighting, balance of light and dark, and what meaning or story the photo could represent. Suggestions are made for how to improve certain photos such as changing the lighting, angle, or focus to make different elements like the background or subject stand out more clearly.
The document discusses several photographs taken of urban textures and architecture. The first photo shows cars lined up on a highway, demonstrating repetition. The second photo shows a tall building with contrast between light and dark areas. The third photo focuses on cracks in a wall. The last photos are of textures on concrete, a burned paper texture, roof textures, twisting pillars, church architecture, and the inside of a cathedral described as resembling the inside of a windpipe. The document discusses several photos taken by Kylee Parshall that draw attention through effective use of lighting, color, simplicity, and lines. One photo of a sign stands out due to lighting that makes the sign pop out against a simple background without distractions. Another draws the eye through its colorful yet simplistic composition. A third appeals through lighting that makes a green building look nicer.
The document discusses photos that have worked well, could be improved, and one that is a disaster. Photos that worked well used lines to lead the viewer to the subject and were uncluttered. Photos that could be improved included one that was too cluttered and would benefit from cropping, one where centering the subject could be improved by moving them off center, and one where changing the angle of trees would make it more interesting. The disaster photo was unbalanced with similar colors and an odd angle that made the building look slanted.
The document is a student's reflection on several experimental photography projects using photomontage techniques. For each project, the student evaluates how well their ideas were realized, the aesthetic qualities of the final images, and aspects that could have been improved. The student used an automatic camera mode and Photoshop features like the collage and threshold tools to manipulate multiple photos into surreal composite images exploring themes of the urban environment. Overall, the student was pleased with the results but felt taking additional photos from different angles could have improved the projects.

The document discusses several photographs and provides feedback on their quality. It praises one photo for having natural poses, good lighting, and decent framing, making it suitable for its intended magazine genre. Another photo is clearer with better lighting, allowing for cropping. A third photo is described as aesthetically pleasing and fulfilling the role of portraying a student role model. However, most photos are said to be dull due to bad weather conditions during the shoot. The best photos feature interesting angles and positioning despite the low lighting challenges.
The document discusses the student's photography project exploring different styles like street photography, architecture, and landscape photography. It includes contact sheets from two photo shoots, 8 final edited images with descriptions of the edits made, and an evaluation of the project covering composition, audience, technical qualities, influences, and skills learned. The student received mostly positive feedback and aims to focus more specifically on street photography for future work.
The document discusses various techniques for effective image composition, including positioning subjects to convey movement or story, simplifying images by removing distracting elements, using the rule of thirds to place subjects off-center, incorporating lines and geometric shapes, balancing color and placement of elements, avoiding mergers that cut off subjects or create distractions, and framing the main subject. It provides examples to illustrate these composition tips and how following or ignoring them can strengthen or weaken an image.
The document provides an analysis of three photos based on their visual language elements, including subject matter, lines, color, shapes, depth of field, lighting, and style.
For the first photo, the analysis describes the subject as a window handle with stained glass in natural colors. It notes the horizontal lines and rich, full colors.
The second photo's subject is light shining through a window onto a painting on a wall. The analysis describes the diagonal lines created by shadows and unsaturated dark colors.
Finally, the third photo's subject is an antique bowl. The analysis discusses its small depth of field, vertical lines, naturalistic lighting, and deep saturated colors with restrained saturation.
Overall,
1. The document discusses several experimental photography techniques that the author explored, including shutter speed, reflection, photomontage, and focus. For shutter speed, the author found that timing is important to capture movement and that colors and lights blur better than other subjects. With reflection photography, ripples in water and curved surfaces can distort reflections. Photomontage involves combining close-up photos into a collage, while poor focus can soften edges and remove unwanted details from images.
2. Across the different techniques, key lessons were that timing is important to capture movement, reflective surfaces and ripples can impact reflections, photomontage works best with many small photos, and slight blurring can soft
I've research Wanda Wulz, a photographer I am interested in and analysed some of her photographs in order to understand the meaning behind her work. I will mimic her style of photography using my own subjects and photo manipulation in response to this artist.
This powerpoint depicts the key points I'm going to explore in my own photography work. I will focus on capturing un-typical stereotypes in order to capture visually stimulating imagery.
The document discusses an extension project interpreting the work of artist Madame Yevonde and creating responsive work. The key theme in Yevonde's work is seen as feminism and advocating female power through expression and roles. In response, the project will experiment with reversing gender roles in pictures, such as depicting males in female roles and females in male roles, to similarly achieve understanding of women's equal power and ability as men.
The document discusses Madame Yevonde, a pioneering English photographer known for her use of color photography in the 1930s. It describes how Yevonde's photographs captured both realism and surrealism by juxtaposing everyday subjects with mythological themes. Notable works included portraits of subjects dressed as Greek gods and goddesses. The document also analyzes one of Yevonde's favorite images, a portrait of Viscountess Mary Ratendone as the muse Euterpe, praising its dramatic composition and use of color and symbolism to convey the subject's lonely or confused emotions.
This document provides a self-critique of an image created by positioning together approximately 50 different photos. The positioning of close-up facial expressions works well to show change over time from multiple perspectives simultaneously. However, with so many images compiled into a medium shot, the overall picture looks quite cluttered. This could be improved by simplifying the image through zooming in or altering colors and shapes to make the main subjects stand out against the cluttered background.
Lee Friedlander - Photo analysis K.Brettbretkath07
This photo was taken from inside a stationary car at a traffic light in Las Vegas, showing buildings along the road reflected in the car's side mirror. The interior of the dark car contrasts with the bright exterior, framing the buildings in two focal points. Leading lines from traffic lights and the window direct the eye to the buildings in the reflection and foreground. The perspective captures a journey of moving forward while looking back, demonstrated by the passing bridge in the mirror.
Rumpelstiltskin tells the story of a mother who chooses to save her own life by agreeing to give away her child, only to regret her decision later when it's too late. The classic folklore tale emphasizes that choices have consequences, as the mother realizes the mistake she has made in giving away her child to save herself.
A girl was locked in a tower by the King and threatened with execution if she couldn't spin straw into gold. Rumpelstiltskin helped her in exchange for her possessions, and eventually her firstborn child. When the child was born, Rumpelstiltskin tried to claim it, but the girl's husband gave her three chances to guess his name. On the third night, a messenger overheard Rumpelstiltskin singing his own name by a campfire and told the girl, allowing her to keep her child.
The document discusses the photographer's theme of capturing different emotions in photographs and how they are influenced by Madame Yevonde's style. The photographer aims to depict emotions through facial expressions similarly to Yevonde's work. To make their photos more like Yevonde's dramatic style, the photographer would need to alter colors and intensities and incorporate more props. An example image is included that was edited in Photoshop to resemble Yevonde's "Medusa" photo by highlighting features and adding a blurred background.
An insight ito the work of Madame Yevonde; some example photos she has captured and a photo analysis of a chosen picture, along with a photo I took and edited in order to imitate the artist's work.
Emotions captured depending on the type of words you give the subject to think about. An edited version of a person is included to imitate the work of Madame Yevonde.
My final photo joiner and analysis (round the table)bretkath07
The document discusses a joiner image made up of 50 different positioned images, including close-ups of people's faces. The different facial expressions show change over time from multiple perspectives simultaneously. However, with so many images placed together in a medium shot, the overall picture looks quite cluttered. This could be improved by simplifying the image, such as zooming in or altering colors and shapes to highlight outlines and make the main subjects stand out more clearly.
1) David Hockney is a British artist known for his contributions to pop art in the 1960s and for pioneering the technique of photo collage, where multiple photographs are arranged to form a composite image.
2) One of Hockney's earliest photo collages was a portrait of his mother made from photographs taken from different angles and perspectives.
3) Hockney's 1985 photo collage "Furstenberg Paris" depicts a street scene composed from approximately 100 photographs, allowing the viewer to feel immersed in the setting and movement over time.
This document provides background information on British photographer Martin Parr and analyzes some of his photos. It discusses Parr's focus on documenting modern consumerism, travel, and tourism. Several of Parr's photos are then described, noting how they use unusual perspectives, vibrant colors, and foreground subjects to draw attention. The document also contains photos submitted by a student aiming to emulate Parr's quirky style through their use of odd angles, simplified compositions, and colorful focal points.
These are images taken within school that I have edited in order to make them more dynamic; a brief description of what I did in order to achieve each effect.
Lee Friedlander took this photo in Las Vegas while stopped at a traffic light in his car. The interior of the car provides contrast to the bright exterior buildings. The photo has two focal points - the buildings outside framed by the car window, and the wing mirror reflection showing a bridge the photographer had just passed. Taken from inside the moving car, the photo represents a journey of moving forward while still looking back at the past.

2. Cowes has many different topics including old town, floating bridge, high street, esplanade and Northwood Park/House among hundreds of others. In a particular quest to take photographs to illustrate the theme of the park and Northwood House, myself and a few others studied closely the subjects within the area. The images I took in my opinion express the spirit within the community and the beauty in which we miss as first glance. I think that I illustrated a lot of the rules of composition within my pictures and overall I am really pleased with them.
3. This image demonstrates the rules of simplicity and balance. The photo is taken from a low angle so the perspective is slightly strange. The foreground is in the format of a silhouette and the light background is an effective contrast. I think that the park and Northwood House are one of the main associates with Cowes and really make up our community.
4. This photograph was taken from the bottom of some steps, I used a portrait format as it best suited the shot. I think this photo shows how old Cowes is but that it is still standing strong. It demonstrates the rule of foreground interest, framing and leading lines.
5. I love this photo as it shows that when you look closely at everyday substances they are extraordinary and beautiful. I love the vibrant colour in the photo. The rose in the foreground is the foreground interest which makes the photo simple and the flower is off centre which follows the rule of thirds.
6. This photo in particular demonstrates the rule of framing; the leaves surround the main subject and are blurred which creates a background focal point. I believe these statues are associated with this Northwood House and are really interesting.
7. Because this photo was taken in motion it creates a sense of energy therefore making the photo dynamic. This photo’s main subject is off centre and is placed in the top left corner (rule of thirds). The background is fairly simple and the angle is quite unusual as it is take from below the main subject. I think the swings within the park are a main attraction, especially to children within Cowes.
8. I really like this photo because I believe it captures happiness and excitement. Once again another photo taken from a low angle but the effect of this image is that you feel as if the person is coming towards you. The leading lines (the side of the slide) lead towards you, and the person is in the top half of the photo (rule of thirds). The balance of the dark foreground and light background is effective in making a good picture.
9. I like this photo because I enjoyed taking it by being sociable with the owners and park users; I think the dogs and the park are a good meeting place for the community. I think this photo is effective because it follows the rules of simplicity, leading lines and the rule of thirds, as the dog is to the left, and the railings lead your eyes to the main subject.
10. This image was taken from the front of Northwood house and I think it could use some improvements as in my opinion it appears quite dull. It could be improved by cropping it and adjusting the colours slightly however, I think that the tall plants make the image look more interesting and lead your eyes to the window.
11. This is one of my favourite photos because it looks unusual but interesting; I think this shows that an old building can look more extraordinary than a modern one. I took this picture from the side, using a portrait format was more suitable as it allowed me to capture a greater length of the column. There is a good contrast and balance between light and dark, also the lines on the building lead you to the main subject.
12. This is another photo that highlights the beauty that we take for granted everyday; this plant was on a rotten roof with cobwebs and mould showing through the cracks. Some things that appear ugly at first glance can be beautiful up close. This is an effective photo that demonstrates the rule of simplicity, balance and perspective.
14. I edited the original photo of Northwood house because I thought it look quite dull and cluttered. In photo shop I cropped the image and adjusted the brightness and contrast to make the photograph look more vibrant. I think that the editing has been a success as the photo looks more interesting and follows more rules of composition. Before
16. I cropped this photo in Photoshop so that the image followed the rule of thirds and I also made the dog brighter. I think the editing I did has had a good effect and it now looks more eye catching. Before After
