Though the effects of the coronavirus are more or less the same on each one of us; pregnant women have been considered as clinically exposed to the added risk of Covid-19 and hence been included in the moderate risk group as a precautionary measure. Expecting mothers in their third trimester or the 28th week, are required to be extra cautious and follow the social distancing norms strictly. Data from various sources revealed women were predominantly affected during their third trimester of pregnancy. Also, women with prevenient medical conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure ,or hypertension ,or prior major surgeries are at an increased risk of enduring the virus and recoup.
Chicken pox pregnancy

Primary varicella infection during pregnancy can increase mortality and morbidity for the mother and cause fetal varicella syndrome or neonatal varicella in the baby. The benefits of vaccinating pregnant women usually outweigh potential risks when disease exposure is likely and infection could harm the mother or fetus.

Prevention of parent to child transmission programme
Mother to child transmission of HIV can occur during pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding. The risk is higher if the mother's HIV infection is in an advanced stage, if she is malnourished, has other STDs, or her membranes rupture early. Antiretroviral therapy and cesarean delivery before labor can reduce transmission risk. Exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months poses a lower risk than mixed feeding. India's PMTCT program provides counseling, testing, antiretroviral prophylaxis to pregnant women and newborns to prevent transmission and aims to reduce transmission by 50% by 2010.

- 3. Covid vaccination produces robust immune response in pregnant and breastfeeding mothers . This is similiar to that in the nonpregnant population. Protective antibodies were isolated in umbilical cord and breast milk of vaccinated mothers implying protection to fetus and newborn. There are no big data on immunisation of pregnant and lactating mothers with covaxin or covishield. In pregnancy, there is much concern regarding transmission of infection to fetus. But , there’s no such mechanism with covid vaccine.
- 4. The risk of getting covid 19 in pregnancy and the resulting morbidity is much more than the theoretical risk from vaccine. It’s recommended to complete the vaccination with the same dose of vaccine taken first. Women can get vaccinated on any day of the menstrual cycle . No need to do pregnancy test before vaccination.
