George Strait
George Strait is a legendary country music singer and songwriter from Texas who has been performing since the 1980s. He is known as the "King of Country Music" and has sold over 68 million albums in the US, making him one of the top-selling artists of all time. Strait served in the US Army and formed his first band before signing a solo contract in 1981. Throughout his career, he has won numerous awards including Entertainer of the Year three times and induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Strait formally retired from touring in 2014 with his farewell Cowboy Rides Away Tour.

The Harlem Renaissance was a black cultural movement that took place in Harlem, New York in the 1920s. · What constitutes American music? (The first thought that comes to my mind when I ask this question is that if there were a true American music, it would have to be that of the American Indians who were the original inhabitants of this part of the world. This is true but as we all know, the European settlers savagely repressed the Native Americans and so little of their music was absorbed into the Euro/American culture.)
It is impossible to answer this question without considering the effect of African traditions on our musical heritage. Consider this quote from the Czech composer Antonin Dvorak, who spent several years in the United States teaching and conducting concerts of his own music:
“I am now satisfied that the future music of this country must be founded upon what are called "negro melodies". This must be the real foundation of any serious and original school of composition to be developed in the United States."
He was correct of course but I doubt he could ever have imagined the direction and diversity that school of composition would take. The "negro melodies" he was referring to are Negro Spirituals, work songs, field "hollers" and other such styles that developed in the South during the years of slavery. These songs are a blend of European musical traditions and African influences and are unique to the United States. They are rooted in the African American experience of slavery and the continuing struggle for freedom but if you think they are primarily political in that sense or racially exclusive, consider another quote for Dvorak:
"In the Negro melodies of America I discover all that is needed for a great and noble school of music. They are pathetic, tender, passionate, melancholy, solemn, religious, bold, merry, gay or what you will. It is music that suits itself to any mood or any purpose. There is nothing in the whole age of composition that cannot be supplied with themes from this source."
These "Negro melodies"- Spirituals, work songs, ragtime and the blues- are in fact at the heart of what American music has become. Everything from popular songs to jazz to "rock and roll" owe something to the style and energy of these songs.
The goal of this paper is to get an understanding the origins of what has become, with all due respect to native Americans, a truly American music.
To do this, I want you to research and write about the following topics:

Music diversity final
Singing and music are an essential part of Native American culture and were used for various purposes. Songs were used to remember historical figures, ask for good weather, perform blessings, and pass on wisdom. They also carried important tribal history, values, and powers to heal or bring good luck. Different singing styles were used, including call-and-response and imitating animal noises. Instruments usually accompanied singing but were not the focus. Music was part of ceremonies and included sacred songs as well as those celebrating heroes and nature. George Strait
George Strait is a legendary country music singer and songwriter from Texas who has been performing since the 1980s. He is known as the "King of Country Music" and has sold over 68 million albums in the US, making him one of the top-selling artists of all time. Strait served in the US Army and formed his first band before signing a solo contract in 1981. Throughout his career, he has won numerous awards including Entertainer of the Year three times and induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Strait formally retired from touring in 2014 with his farewell Cowboy Rides Away Tour.
The Harlem Renaissance
The Harlem Renaissance was a black cultural movement that took place in Harlem, New York in the 1920s. Many African Americans migrated north to Harlem through the Great Migration to escape racial discrimination and a poor economy in the south. Harlem became known as the cultural capital of black America, spawning great works of literature, music, and art that celebrated black identity and promoted racial pride and unity. The Harlem Renaissance had a significant influence on culture in the United States but faced criticism for how black culture was sometimes exploited or exoticized for white entertainment.

· What constitutes American music? (The first thought that comes to my mind when I ask this question is that if there were a true American music, it would have to be that of the American Indians who were the original inhabitants of this part of the world. This is true but as we all know, the European settlers savagely repressed the Native Americans and so little of their music was absorbed into the Euro/American culture.)
It is impossible to answer this question without considering the effect of African traditions on our musical heritage. Consider this quote from the Czech composer Antonin Dvorak, who spent several years in the United States teaching and conducting concerts of his own music:
“I am now satisfied that the future music of this country must be founded upon what are called "negro melodies". This must be the real foundation of any serious and original school of composition to be developed in the United States."
He was correct of course but I doubt he could ever have imagined the direction and diversity that school of composition would take. The "negro melodies" he was referring to are Negro Spirituals, work songs, field "hollers" and other such styles that developed in the South during the years of slavery. These songs are a blend of European musical traditions and African influences and are unique to the United States. They are rooted in the African American experience of slavery and the continuing struggle for freedom but if you think they are primarily political in that sense or racially exclusive, consider another quote for Dvorak:
"In the Negro melodies of America I discover all that is needed for a great and noble school of music. They are pathetic, tender, passionate, melancholy, solemn, religious, bold, merry, gay or what you will. It is music that suits itself to any mood or any purpose. There is nothing in the whole age of composition that cannot be supplied with themes from this source."
These "Negro melodies"- Spirituals, work songs, ragtime and the blues- are in fact at the heart of what American music has become. Everything from popular songs to jazz to "rock and roll" owe something to the style and energy of these songs.
The goal of this paper is to get an understanding the origins of what has become, with all due respect to native Americans, a truly American music.
To do this, I want you to research and write about the following topics:
1. The Negro Spiritual (pp. 44-46 in the text)
a. What are they and where did they come from?
b. What is their relation to Gospel music?
c. Describe the basic musical elements of Spirituals as best you can, using the concepts of melody, rhythm, harmony, timbre, texture and form as discussed in the text.

The Popular Music Industry

Research Project
1. The study aimed to explore the effects of classical music on stress and anxiety in students. It used a sample of 20 male university students and measured stress and anxiety before and after listening to classical music using a standardized scale.
2. The results of paired t-tests showed that while classical music led to a small decrease in average stress and anxiety scores, the change was not statistically significant.
3. Prior research has shown mixed results on the impact of music on stress and anxiety, with over half of studies finding beneficial effects, but the specific mechanisms are still not fully understood.
Research Project
1. The study aimed to explore the effects of classical music on stress and anxiety in students. It used a scale to measure stress/anxiety in 20 male university students before and after listening to classical music.

The Challenge of Bebop
The development of bebop in the 1940s is crucial to understanding
jazz as we know it. A product of jam sessions, big bands, small com-
bos, and countless hours of "woodshedding," the musical language
of bebop included rapid tempos, dissonant chords and melodic lines,
tritone and other chordal substitutions, extensive chromaticism, off-
beat piano accompaniment ("comping"), walking bass lines, poly-
rhythmic drumming, and, perhaps most important, a focus on extend-
ed, improvised soloing on the front-line instruments. Swing-era
heavyweights such as Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, Roy Eldridge,
Art Tatum, Duke Ellington, Jimmy Blanton, and Walter Page had pre-
viously explored aspects of this language in the 1930s, but they came
together in spectacular fashion in the work of Charlie Parker, John
Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie, and Thelonious Monk, to name a handful of
bebop's best-known practitioners.1
Bebop continues to be a core element of the language of jazz. It in-
forms the work of most contemporary players, and many stylistic and
technical innovations created in the 1940s remain integral parts of jazz

Proposal: The Ark Project and The BEEP Inc
1.) Introduction
Our Movement is not new; it is the same as it was for Freedom, Justice, and Equality since we were labeled as slaves. However, this movement at its core must entail economics.
2.) Historical Context
This is the same movement because none of the previous movements, such as boycotts, were ever completed. For some, maybe, but for the most part, it’s just a place to keep your stable until you’re ready to assimilate them into your system. The rest of the crabs are left in the world’s worst parts, begging for scraps.
3.) Economic Empowerment
Our Movement aims to show that it is indeed possible for the less fortunate to establish their economic system. Everyone else – Caucasian, Asian, Mexican, Israeli, Jews, etc. – has their systems, and they all set up and usurp money from the less fortunate. So, the less fortunate buy from every one of them, yet none of them buy from the less fortunate. Moreover, the less fortunate really don’t have anything to sell.
4.) Collaboration with Organizations
Our Movement will demonstrate how organizations such as the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, National Urban League, Black Lives Matter, and others can assist in creating a much more indestructible Black Wall Street.
5.) Vision for the Future
Our Movement will not settle for less than those who came before us and stopped before the rights were equal. The economy, jobs, healthcare, education, housing, incarceration – everything is unfair, and what isn’t is rigged for the less fortunate to fail, as evidenced in society.
6.) Call to Action
Our movement has started and implemented everything needed for the advancement of the economic system. There are positions for only those who understand the importance of this movement, as failure to address it will continue the degradation of the people deemed less fortunate.

We may not all have the same beliefs, but if our methods are tried, tested, and proven, we can come together and help others. - 2. “There are many discrete texts within the very wide range of “hip- hop”, for instance, but hip-hop itself can be thought of as a diffuse text made up of music, clothing, celebrities, gestures, and so forth...” (Brummett, 2011, p. 91) Country music, like hip-hop, is a complex music genre that consists of many different songs by many different artists. A certain “country culture” has been created and is maintained by country music fans through aspects such as songs, clothing, artifacts, phrases, and people. Wednesday, April 23, 14
- 3. “An ideology or consciousness is an interrelated system of meanings that is generated by the system of artifacts that constitute a culture” (Brummett, p.26) The culture of country music has created an ideology of what it means to be an American. - 5. “Persuaders who use visual images in texts..take great care to present the images in a way that facilitate preferred readings” (Brummett, p.168) Country artists will often wear, display, or make reference to the American flag in order to facilitate a preferred reading from their audience.This intended meaning often portrays the artist as patriotic or supports their ideals of what it means to be American. “Images occur in context that affect attribution of meaning to them and reduce their ambiguity” (Brummett, p.168) By placing anything next to, behind, in front of, or anywhere in relation to the American flag, it automatically encourages audiences to view that person/place/thing as American.The intention is usually to create a sense of national pride and community in the audience members. - 7. Alcohol While many music genres make reference to alcohol, country music seems to have a great deal of songs that mention it. Specifically, country artists seem to favor beer and whiskey when it comes to alcohol.This acts as another artifact that contributes to country culture. Wednesday, April 23, 14

- 9. “A sign becomes an artifact as it becomes charged with particular meanings that belong to a system.The meaning relates to the meanings of other artifacts in the cultural system; the whole group or system of those meanings is consciousness or ideology”. (Brummett, p. 27) It is through the use of artifacts like the American flag and alcohol that the main ideologies of country music are supported.The artists of country music use these symbols to create a culture based on patriotism and appreciation of the small things in life (such as beer). Here is a music video from Zac Brown Band that illustrates the previously mentioned idea of celebrating a simple lifestyle.This song, “Chicken Fried” became extremely popular in country music culture.The band sings about different artifacts that are assumably well-known to most Americans. - 11. In Conclusion.. Cultures are created and maintained through artifacts, symbols, images, and phrases that all support the main ideologies of the culture. Country music culture has an ideology that is all about what it means to be an American and appreciating the small pleasures in life that the “average American” gets to enjoy.The songs sing about these artifacts and main values of the culture, they are portrayed visually in music videos and concerts, and the fans that take on that preferred subject position perpetuate the beliefs. The artifacts and words themselves do not create a culture, but rather the attribution of meaning that country artists and fans create in relation to those aspects are what make up the country music culture.
