- Humans are extremely similar genetically, with 99.9% of our genomes being identical. The remaining 0.1% variation is not due to race but rather various migration patterns.
- Race is a social construct that is loosely based on a few traits but has many blurry boundaries, as there is no clear genetic or biological basis for dividing humans into distinct subspecies.
- Studying mitochondrial DNA, which is maternally inherited and does not recombine, can provide insights into human ancestry and migration over generations. The hypervariable regions within mtDNA evolve rapidly and can be used to determine genetic similarity between individuals.
The document discusses the underrepresentation and misrepresentation of women in media. It notes that women make up only 24% of people portrayed in news stories, and are often depicted in domestic or victim roles. This impacts society by normalizing these limited portrayals of women. The document also examines the lack of representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women, and women in sports, who receive less than 10% of sports media coverage. It advocates challenging gender bias in media through analysis and promoting more diverse portrayals of women.

- The author moved from Hungary to Australia as a child in 1989 due to the fall of communism and still maintains cultural ties to Hungary while calling Australia home.
- Speaking multiple languages provides cognitive benefits according to physiological studies, and Australia's multicultural population would benefit from becoming fluent in languages besides English.
- Issues around gender equality, obesity rates, and advocating for a sugar tax to improve public health in Australia's future are also briefly mentioned.
The document summarizes current demographic trends in Utah based on data from the 2010 Census and other sources. It finds that Utah's population is becoming more diverse, with the Hispanic/Latino population increasing the most at 64.8% between 2000-2010. Populations of color tend to have lower income and education levels and higher rates of poverty and lack of health insurance compared to whites. The data project that minorities will become the majority in the U.S. by 2042 and in Utah the child population will be over 50% minority by 2023.
This document discusses the concept of colorblind racism in the United States. It begins by providing historical context on shifts from de jure and de facto racism pre-1960 to the challenges of covert racism post-civil rights movement. While civil rights eliminated legalized racism, racial disparities remain in areas like income, education, health, and incarceration. The document then examines these disparities in more detail and discusses how colorblind racism rationalizes them through notions of diversity, meritocracy, and blaming people of color rather than addressing systemic inequalities or covert racism.

1. Psychologists worldwide are focusing greater attention on how psychology can contribute to reducing poverty through special issues in peer-reviewed journals on this topic in mid-2010.
2. Studies show that income inequality is strongly associated with poorer physical and mental health outcomes, and that these health inequalities do not decrease even as overall population health improves.
3. Psychologists have an opportunity and ethical responsibility to use their expertise to better describe and address the causes and impacts of poverty and suffering in societies in order to inform policies that can promote well-being and more inclusive communities.
Demography is the scientific study of human populations, including changes in population size and composition. It focuses on fertility, mortality, marriage, and migration. There are five stages of the demographic cycle: high stationary, early expansion, late expansion, low stationary, and declining. Demographic measurement tools are used to study and measure populations statistically and dynamically, including birth rate, death rate, growth rate, and life expectancy. World population has grown significantly over time, reaching 1 billion in 1800 and over 7 billion currently, with most of the growth occurring in developing countries in Asia, Latin America, and Africa.
The document summarizes key findings from the 2009 American Community Survey about demographic and economic characteristics in Utah:
1) Utah continues to have a high birth rate and larger household sizes compared to the national average. The state also has high rates of educational attainment, with over 90% of residents having a high school diploma and 28.5% holding a bachelor's degree.
2) Median household income in Utah is $55,430, ranking the state 15th highest. Poverty rates are lower in Utah than the national average, at 11.5% overall.
3) Most Utah residents drive to work alone, and average commute times, at 21 minutes, are shorter than the national average.
Missing Pieces: Women and Minorities on BoardsKevin Carter
The document summarizes a 2010 census on gender and racial/ethnic diversity among directors on Fortune 500 boards. It finds that while women and minorities now represent around half of the US population, white men continue to dominate Fortune 500 boards, holding around three-quarters of board seats. In the six years since the previous census, white male representation on these boards has increased while representation of women and minorities has remained low. The census calls for greater inclusion of diverse leaders on corporate boards to reflect changing demographics and ensure business success.
The Asian population in the US has grown rapidly in recent decades and is currently the highest-income and best-educated racial group. It is extremely diverse, composed of many subgroups with different cultures and languages. Existing research shows Asian American LGBT individuals face challenges relating to their multiple minority identities, including discrimination within their families, Asian and LGBT communities. They experience higher levels of depression and health issues associated with the stresses of racism and homophobia. The purpose of the literature presented is to understand the experiences of Asian American LGBT populations and provide considerations for therapists working with this community.

Editor's Notes
When European settlers first landed in the new world, they wiped out much of the Native American population. Like Australia, this was accomplished by means of war and disease. Today, Native Americans make up 1.7% of the total population of the United States (U. S. Census Bureau, 2012). Unlike the Australians, Americans are frank and outspoken. They value innovation, independence, industry, and integrity. They strive to “live the American Dream.” It is believed that no matter what a person’s background, if they work hard and are ambitious, they can become anything (Culturegrams, 2013).
Similar to the United States, European settlers wiped out most of the indigenous population. This happened by means of war and disease. Today, the Aborigines people make up 1% of the total population (Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, 2012). Even though this number is small, the Aborigine culture has influence on the country and the history. Australians are very proud of their heritage. They value tolerance and fairness. Also, these people value hard work, being on time, and they are very friendly. Most Australians appreciate material things and love to enjoy life. Recent drought and climate change, like many Americans, have made them conscious of environmental issues (Culturegrams, 2013).
The United States ranks 47th out of 146 countries in Gender Inequality Index. According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, opportunities in the workforce are the fastest growing for minorities. It is true that minorities are not represented well in all occupations, however, equal opportunity laws are creating fairness in the workplace (United States Bureau of Labor and Statistics, 2011).
Australia ranks 18th out of 146 in Gender Inequality Index (Culturegrams, 2013). Unlike the United States, Australia is predominantly Caucasian. While women have pushed for rights in the workplace, not as much has been done to benefit minorities. When looking at data provided from the United States, it is easy to define and understand the opportunities for minorities. However, the data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics seems to focus only as women as a minority.
Religion is more an important part of daily life in the United States. The traditional American family consisted of two children living with a father and mother, however, that is changing. There are more single-parent homes, same sex homes, and unmarried couples having children is on the rise. In fact, nearly one third children are born out of wedlock. About 16% of the population are living as extended families and family is still extremely important. More women than men receive higher education. Like in Australia, education is compulsory from ages 5-16. Students attend school at least 12 years. About 79% of Americans graduate and many at least begin college. Education is supported by taxes, thus it is not equal. Some students do attend private or chartered schools and some students are home schooled. The United States offers some of the best colleges and universities in the world (Culturegrams, 2013).
The currency is the Australian dollar. Australia has a vast amount of mineral deposits and other resources. They are a world supplier of beef and wool. As far as the labor force, there is a large and diverse service sector. Manufacturing and service industry contribute as much to the economy and exports as does farming. Australia is one of the fastest countries recuperating from the slumping economy (Culturegrams, 2013).
The currency is the American dollar. The United States is among the wealthiest countries in the world. However, there is a huge gap between wealthy and poor Americans. In fact, that gap continues to widen. The United States is service oriented. There are a lot of investments outside the country. There is also a great deal of demand for United States products. This is especially true in the entertainment world. The housing market continues to struggle (Culturegrams, 2013).
When looking for definitions of various crimes, it is the same for the United States and Australia. In both countries, crimes such as violent crimes, property crimes, and sexual assault are decreasing. In both countries, males are more likely to be violators of crime and victims of crime. Murders and abductions occur more often in community locations (The United States Department of Justice, 2013) (Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, 2013).
Acts of terrorism have changed security measures in the United States. Also, the advancements in technology allows the interconnectedness of the world. This interconnectedness is allowing criminal activity. While violent crime is decreasing, technology related crimes are increasing (The United States Department of Justice, 2013).
This month, The Australian Institute of Criminology released their annual report. The homicide rate it at a record low. Interestingly, the weapon of choice, is a knife. Homicides as a knife as the weapon is up while homicides committed with a firearm, is down. While the exact statistics were given, like the United States, a great deal of homicides result from family violence. Even with violent crime declining, public safety is important.
