This is my presentation on the casting choices my team and I made for our A2 production. Casting is very important for this film, as if we don't choose the right people, the film could give off the wrong genre and seem almost like a parody.
Proposal
A man who is homeless accepts an offer to go on an adventure that transports him to another dimension to complete missions. He is greeted by an alien woman named Helda who explains he can earn money by completing missions. Though his friend doubts the opportunity, he decides to take the risk in hopes of getting enough money to improve his life. The target audience is males and females ages 15 and older, as the missions could be disturbing for younger viewers. It may appeal particularly to older males as it resembles Star Wars, but could also attract "achievers" who want to see the main character regain his wealth and independence.
Our characters, Using Propp
Vladimir Propp identified typical characters that appear in narratives, including the hero, villain, donor, dispatcher, false hero, helper, and princess. Propp argued these characters provide structure and carry out narrative functions. The document discusses applying Propp's theory to analyze characters in a music video about domestic violence. Our media product, Porcelain, took inspiration from existing horror films and TV shows in its conventions, cinematography, mise-en-scene, and editing techniques. It uses typical shots and stereotypes of the horror genre, such as close-ups of creepy dolls and scenes in dark woods. However, the protagonist, who is aware of the doll's possession, challenges conventions by showing a hero who has fear. The title sequence incorporates fast cuts between shots and uses of dim and creepy colors, as seen in films like Se7en and Durham County, to engage the audience. While conforming to horror conventions, Porcelain challenges them somewhat through its vulnerable main character.

They conducted a questionnaire to learn what audiences want in a horror film but did not ask enough questions to get sufficient information. Overall, Harry learned about the filmmaking process, including shooting techniques, editing, and sound design.
