The document summarizes key points from Andrew Palmer's attendance at the ITEX 2016 conference over three days. Some of the highlights included:
1) Information around rethinking sales territories to focus on developing long-term relationships with a set number of qualified leads rather than postcode-based territories was of interest.
2) While office paper usage has declined 1.2% since 2013 in the US, some industries have grown and others declined more significantly.
3) The need for diversification and transitioning to managed services and recurring revenue models is important to withstand pricing pressures.
4) Successful long-term customer engagement requires a strategic focus beyond initial sales and mid-contract touchpoints.
This document discusses managing businesses in economic uncertainty. It covers business pressures from markets, technology, and society that organizations face. Organizations respond to these pressures through actions supported by information technology (IT). Strategic information systems can provide competitive advantages by helping implement strategies to increase performance. The document also discusses the need for front-to-back office integration in businesses to manage customer relationships effectively, reduce costs, increase profits, and achieve sustainable competitive advantages.
This document discusses payroll optimization and transformation. It notes that payroll is a symptom, not the primary process or source, and that sustainability and ROI of payroll transformation depends on business adaptability to standardization. Effective change management is needed and must focus on appropriate levels of change, though it cannot change bad attitudes. The key takeaway is that what is the "to be" process today will be the "as is" process of tomorrow.

Why aren't companies responding to digital? Seeing the Light vs. Feeling the ...Ben Gilchriest
Originally posted Jan., 2013. Version 3.0 update posted August, 2014.
Every industry is being impacted by digital; social media, mobile apps., data analytics, more agile technology, cloud….and the new customer expectations that this engenders. It's broadly accepted that this is challenging familiar business models and creating new levels of competition that can unseat well established companies. Whilst these companies are reacting, investing heavily in digital, is this enough? This document provides a brief summary of the Digital Inflection point; that whilst a response to digital may add value, it might not necessarily prepare a company for the combination of existing, or future, elements that have a disruptive impact on the industry as a whole. It briefly describes how successful companies have responded to this by smartly balancing digital and transformational efforts to realise a Digital Advantage. It was presented at a recent symposium so is an abridged version. To find out more please do get in touch.
Big data analytics can provide benefits but also has limitations. While it can find correlations in large data sets, some correlations may be meaningless noise rather than true signals. Additionally, the metrics and algorithms used may not capture all important factors and can make unjust assumptions. Performance metrics should consider not just outcomes but also impact on employee morale, loyalty, and stress levels, as focusing too much on short-term performance can harm organizations over the long term. The best evaluations of people often come from those who know them well, rather than algorithms alone.
Elevating the Role of the CIO to Strategic Business PartnerChangepoint
The document discusses elevating the role of the CIO to a strategic business partner. It outlines an IT investment lifecycle with key phases including capturing business demands, prioritizing projects, delivering projects to track goals, assessing impact, and communicating across the business. It notes that while many CIOs want this strategic role, few have adopted it, and C-suite peers often don't see CIOs as enabling strategic decision making. The lifecycle aims to ensure IT investments are properly prioritized and aligned to business goals and deliver value, while managing risks such as misaligned projects or goals. Future CIOs must serve as strategists, take calculated risks, manage IT portfolios, and maintain risk visibility.
Business Strategies/ IT Strategies Subjective QuestionNabilah Nadzri
The document provides questions about identifying business and IT strategies. It asks how companies can measure the profitability of IT projects, what planning methods could be used to develop business and IT strategies, and how change management can minimize resistance and maximize acceptance of changes. It also asks if well-planned strategies often fail to translate into action, and how IT investments can meet business expectations to enable future benefits.

The document advocates for CIOs to take a strategic role in enabling business strategies and pursuing opportunities rather than just focusing on productivity and efficiency gains.

How a US Recession Could Impact India’s Startup EcosystemMY Valuation
The US recession has had significant impacts on Indian startups. This blog explores the effects of such a downturn and provides survival tips for Indian startups during a recession.
This is the scaled-down version from the presentation that I did in front of some local business people about the usefulness of existing business data when harnessed with Business Intelligence (BI) techniques and processes.
Executive Directors and CFOs often have different measurements than CIOs, by which to evaluate IT spending and different concerns that must be addressed. This discrepancy can sometimes lead to contentious relationships during strategic planning and budgeting between IT and leadership. EDs/CFOs might not fully understand IT and the value that it can enable. CIOs may not understand the nuances of IT budgeting and communicating the value of IT as an investment rather than a cost center. For example, EDs/CFOs may be more concerned with compliance and impact to profitability, on the other hand, CIOs may be looking at application compatibility and maintainability with current staffing.
This presentation that will provides ten key points that can help to get everyone on the same page—improving the organization’s ability to achieve its mission and focusing on the future.
INEVOLVE SB - Business Continuity PlanningMike Minzes
This document discusses business continuity planning and argues that organizations can and should develop their own continuity plans internally rather than relying on expensive external consultants. It provides examples of past crises that organizations did not plan for. The author argues that common excuses for not planning like "it will never happen to us" are misguided. The approach presented simplifies continuity processes and strategies, views it as an extension of normal operations, and develops the program internally with existing staff and systems rather than consultants. Benefits include plans being low-cost, effective, actionable, and internally managed rather than dependent on consultants. The author provides examples of organizations that successfully used this approach and offers to help organizations develop their own continuity program.
The slides were commissioned in 2016 for an in-house development program at a large Australian public company.
They have been slightly edited. In 2019, they still seem quite relevant.
Budgeting and forecasting: The differences.

HR outsourcing provides benefits like reduced costs, increased compliance and expertise, and allows companies to focus on their core business. There are two main types of HR outsourcing - professional employer organizations that form partnerships, and human resource outsourcers that are completely independent third parties. Insperity is a leader in the HR outsourcing industry with over 25 years of experience, comprehensive services and benefits, high client satisfaction ratings, and a mission to help businesses succeed.
Need Middleware Monitoring? Build a Better Business Case.SL Corporation
The document discusses building a business case for middleware monitoring by estimating financial return on investment. It provides an example of how to calculate costs of incidents from outage data and use it to show a monitoring solution would pay for itself within 5.6 months. It also shares lessons from implementing monitoring at Citibank, including starting with a small proof of concept, quantifying results, and getting support from stakeholders.
This document discusses common issues that cause companies' growth projections to fail. It identifies five main causes of overinflated growth projections: (1) double counting of benefits across initiatives, (2) overlooking constraints like resources and IT capabilities, (3) static analyses that don't account for market changes, (4) overly optimistic forecasts due to biases, and (5) a lack of unique benefits for each initiative. The document advocates addressing these issues by ensuring growth plans are well-aligned with actions, use risk-adjusted forecasts, incorporate market dynamics, are based on realistic timelines, and have initiatives with unique benefits. This will create more realistic expectations of growth prospects and enable companies to address any gaps before experiencing an unexpected shortfall
Executives often wrestle with when to support an initiative to improve business. Their staff may not want to push the idea until it's "really serious." Here's a suggestion on how to take a step back and look at "What do you give up if you keep waiting?"
7 steps to business and it alignment it management templatesIT-Toolkits.org
The goal of perfect alignment is unachievable because of the dynamic nature of business. Every organization operates in an ecosystem and is affected by the forces at play in it. Economy, industry, competitors etc. are all players in this ecosystem who are continuously evolving. Similarly, knowledge and tools – such as information technology – are also continuously changing. To remain competitive i.e. maintain differentiation, every organization must adapt in response to the actions and activities of others in its ecosystem. Organizations that do not adapt lose their competitive edge over time and disappear.
Summer Lindman. "The phases of building out a robust customer health score"Octopus Events
1. Phase 1: Decide what “customer health” actually means to your business.
1.1. Is customer health a metric you want to use to predict churn, or is it a metric used by customer success to focus their efforts on the right clients.
1.2. How often do you want to (or can) update your customer health score?
1.3. What elements do you want to look at?
- Usage,
- Engagement,
- NPS score,
- Length of time as a customer,
- Executive alignment.
1.4. What are the weights of the score?
1.5. Is it only quantitative information, or also qualitative?
2. Phase 2: Put your health score into practice.
2.1. Get buy-in from your executive team.
2.2. Gain adoption from the teams.
2.3. Begin using health as a measure of performance for customer success and product teams.
3. Phase 3: Analyze and iterate.
3.1. Are we calculating the health score often enough? How frequently is it changing?
3.2. Are each of our metrics something the teams can influence? Are we looking at the most impactful metrics?
3.3. Are our weights correct?
4. Phase 4: Revise and repeat.
This document discusses measuring performance in pest control businesses. It covers measuring financial performance through profit and loss statements and key ratios. It also discusses measuring marketing, sales, and operational performance through metrics like leads generated, proposals written, jobs completed efficiently. Overall it emphasizes the importance of measurement and data to effectively manage a pest control business for growth.

HCL Notes and Domino License Cost Reduction in the World of DLAUpanagenda
Webinar Recording: https://www.panagenda.com/webinars/hcl-notes-and-domino-license-cost-reduction-in-the-world-of-dlau/
The introduction of DLAU and the CCB & CCX licensing model caused quite a stir in the HCL community. As a Notes and Domino customer, you may have faced challenges with unexpected user counts and license costs. You probably have questions on how this new licensing approach works and how to benefit from it. Most importantly, you likely have budget constraints and want to save money where possible. Don’t worry, we can help with all of this!
We’ll show you how to fix common misconfigurations that cause higher-than-expected user counts, and how to identify accounts which you can deactivate to save money. There are also frequent patterns that can cause unnecessary cost, like using a person document instead of a mail-in for shared mailboxes. We’ll provide examples and solutions for those as well. And naturally we’ll explain the new licensing model.
Join HCL Ambassador Marc Thomas in this webinar with a special guest appearance from Franz Walder. It will give you the tools and know-how to stay on top of what is going on with Domino licensing. You will be able lower your cost through an optimized configuration and keep it low going forward.
These topics will be covered
- Reducing license cost by finding and fixing misconfigurations and superfluous accounts
- How do CCB and CCX licenses really work?
- Understanding the DLAU tool and how to best utilize it
- Tips for common problem areas, like team mailboxes, functional/test users, etc
- Practical examples and best practices to implement right away

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.
Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.
