Archaeologists discovered evidence of early humans living in the Isernia "La Pineta" camp in Italy around 730,000 years ago. Remains found at the site indicate that the Homo erectus or Homo heidelbergensis inhabitants hunted animals like bison and rhinoceros, and scavenged carcasses for meat. They lived seasonally in the area, which was suitable for grazing animals during times of plentiful vegetation and water sources. The inhabitants discarded animal bone remnants and tools in a nearby watercourse to prevent the smell of decay.
