COPA Peer-Coach Teaching
Model at 15th St. School
(2014-15 School Year)
By Octavio Fierros, COPA Physical Education Specialist
Welcome to COPA Year 2 at 15th St. School
 Creating Opportunities for Physical Activity (COPA) is a grant-funded Physical Education
program under Providence Little Company of Mary Hospital. This year, Ford Motors will
fund the program. There are certain guidelines the PE specialist needs to follow in order
to keep the program at 15th St. School.
 Thank you for participating in the COPA program for 15th St. School. This is our second
year at the school and we are expecting it to be better than the first!
 Welcome new teachers to the program. You should expect a visit from me during the first
week of school before COPA begins the week of August 25th.
 Please let me know when you finish this reading this COPA Orientation presentation.
This saves time from going to your classroom and giving you a personal introduction to
the program. You can let me know by e-mailing me.
 Please understand that Mr. Fierros, the COPA PE specialist, will be on campus on
Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays all day. You can e-mail him at
octavio.fierros@providence.org if you have any questions.
COPA Peer-Coach Teaching Model Phases
Phase 1
• Observation Phase
•The observation phase
took place the first year
of the program during
the 2013-14 school
year.
•Teachers who are
meeting with PE
specialist every week
will observe him during
lessons.
Phase 2
• Team-Teaching/
Independent
Teaching Phase
•Teachers who meet
with PE specialist
every other week will
team-teach with him
and teach
independently when
PE specialist is not
present.
Phase 3
• Coaching Students
for Grade-Level
Championships
•Teachers will teach PE
lesson to students,
according to lessons
on clipboard. Then,
teacher will coach
their finalists in the
grade-level
championships.
Phase 4
• Documenting and
Teaching Logs
• The finalists for each
activity will be written
down so PE specialist can
put them in the
“finalists” logs before
grade-level
championships. Teachers
will also sign during all
PE sessions in the “Peer-
Coach Teaching Model
Sign-up Log-in” sheet.
PE Equipment in your Classroom vs.
PE Equipment in Equipment Bin
 This year, most of the COPA equipment will be
distributed to your classroom between lesson
units. Please do not have your students use
COPA equipment during recess and lunch.
Equipment will be collected during the “bye”
week.
 Other limited equipment will be in the
equipment bin in the playground. When using
the bin, please do not have students inside
the bin. We need to keep the bin organized for
other teachers who are also checking out
equipment bin. The bin has a combination
lock (8-22-12). The combo for the lock is also
listed in your clipboard.
 This information will be provided in the “COPA
Master Calendar” that will be sent out the
first week of school in your clipboard.
In-class equipment Equipment in bin

COPA Lesson Structure
o The COPA lesson structure involves a 30-minute lesson with 5-minute warm-up exercises
and 25 minute activity. Your call if you would like to go over 30 minutes. (California
Department of Education requires 200 minutes every 10 days of Physical Education for
elementary school students. Due to limited time, COPA is asking for 60 minutes every 10
days, which is still not enough physical activity for our children today.)
o If you see the “Cardio Carnival Activity” logo on your lesson that means those activities
will be conducted during a school-wide COPA event that will take place later in the
school year. As part of your agreement to join the COPA program, teachers will take
conduct an activity during the COPA Cardio Carnival.
o If you see a see a ribbon on the lesson that means that your students will be competing
within your class. Then, the winners will face the winners from another class of the same
grade level. The grade level championships will take place after we are done with certain
units. It will take place on a “bye week” (a week when nobody has regular COPA). The PE
specialist will referee all games. Please remind your students keep their ribbons until
the end of the school year. Those with 5 ribbons will get a special prize! Also, teachers
who win championships will also get a ribbon. If you collect 5 ribbons, you also get a
special prize!

COPA Cardio Carnival
o As part of Ford grant, we are required to organize a school-wide field day in
September (day to be determined soon). The COPA Cardio Carnival will include
several fun games for your students.
o Ford Motors employees will attend Cardio Carnival at 15th St. School during their
“Global Week of Caring” (week of September 8-12, 2014).
o Teacher who signed up for the COPA program this year will help out by
instructing an activity of their choice (activities to be determined soon).
o More details coming soon!

CONCLUSION
o PLEASE E-MAIL ME AT octavio.fierros@providence.org if you would like to sign
up for the COPA program this year and when you are done with this
orientation presentation. This will save time from me going to your class and
giving you a personal orientation. If you have any questions, e-mail me!
