Medicare was established in 1965 to provide health insurance for Americans aged 65 and older or younger people with disabilities. It is a federal program run by the government that guarantees coverage to over 48 million people. While expensive initially, the government has taken steps to control costs such as moving procedures to outpatient settings and slowing spending growth.
