The Cool School Challenge is an educational program intended to engage students and teachers in practical strategies to reduce carbon dioxide ( CO 2 ) and other greenhouse gas emissions schoolwide.   What is the  Cool School Challenge?
Reduce carbon dioxide emissions in and around schools. Encourage student leadership and empowerment. Foster a community of teachers/students working together to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.  Educate young people, and by proxy their families. Goals of the  Challenge
Get started.  Conduct an audit. Create an action plan.  Take the pledge.  Monitor & evaluate.  Share your results.   How It Works

Results to Date Total CO 2  Savings –  1,791,980 lbs. Electricity $$$ Savings -  RHS saved $22,500 in first three years.  Teachers Trained  –  400+ in WA and 40 in IL. Pledges Received -  115 schools in WA, CO, FL, NY, IL and CA, and Dubai.

  • #19 Katie The Cool School Challenge received EPA’s 2009 national Clean Air Excellence Award for its ‘impact, innovation and replicability’ chosen from 125 applicants. Also - awarded the 2008 President’s Environmental Youth Award in the Rose Garden in DC, following which Redmond High School students met with Senators Cantwell and Murray. Mike Town, the Redmond high school teacher who originated Cool School Challenge, is awarded the 2009 Teacher of the Year by North American Association of Environmental Education.
