Current maintenance operations and integrity checks on a wide array of structures require personnel entry into normally-inaccessible or hazardous areas to perform necessary non-destructive inspections. Recently there has been increase in need for adopting smart sensing technologies to SHM so this review focus on sensing, monitoring and assessment for civil infra-structure. At present, the commonly used crack detection methods include physical and electrochemical methods, but there are shortcomings such as large equipment area, low detection frequency, and complex operation. This research develops and validates an array of Ultrasonic sensors for surface crack detection. It is a non-destructive testing (NDT) with potential applications for locating and up monitoring cracks and flaws during structural health management. This research presents the quantitative crack detection capabilities of the Ultrasonic sensor, its performance in actual structural environments, and the prospects for structural health monitoring applications

Current maintenance operations and integrity checks on a wide array of structures require personnel entry into normally-inaccessible or hazardous areas to perform necessary non-destructive inspections. Recently there has been increase in need for adopting smart sensing technologies to SHM so this review focus on sensing, monitoring and assessment for civil infra-structure. At present, the commonly used crack detection methods include physical and electrochemical methods, but there are shortcomings such as large equipment area, low detection frequency, and complex operation. This research develops and validates an array of Ultrasonic sensors for surface crack detection. It is a non-destructive testing (NDT) with potential applications for locating and up monitoring cracks and flaws during structural health management. This research presents the quantitative crack detection capabilities of the Ultrasonic sensor, its performance in actual structural environments, and the prospects for structural health monitoring applications

- 2. Monitoring the condition of the steel cord belt is crucial for the long term operation of the conveyor belt. Conveyor belt scanning systems assess the condition of the belt splice and carcass. The scan provides a coloured graphical image of the damage and the precise latitude and longitudinal position of the belt. Splice analysis is simplified and the location of the cord end is also shown.
- 3. Steel cord belt scanning systems were available since 1980s. The system preconditions the steel cord by running it through the magnetic field. The discontinuity in the belt or cord damage is identified as it moves through the sensing transducer with one or more coils. The result of the transducer is sent to the chart recorder where the voltage fluctuations results in series of transients.
- 4. The data collected from the CAT scan system is use friendly and provides a visual graphic of the data.The Trace is the general summary of the belt after the scanning is done. The splice and cord damage location was identified on the trace. A blank is seen if there is no damage and if a damage occurs it indicates a coloured image with red indicators, meaning loss of steel mass.
- 5. The weakest point in any belt is the splice. The new splice needs to adhere with the manufacturer’s specifications. The unique graphical image process provides X-ray images of the cord ends. The steel cord splice was closed and vulcanised in the past. There was no chance to check if the splice was properly constructed. Only X rays can identify the cord end locations. This was an expensive proposition but CAT has changed all this.
- 6. CAT scanning device is accepted by many and has received positive reviews. It is a unique graphical imaging system that allows precise analysis of the cord damage and gets rid of any splice problems. It is the best maintenance tool that offers a detailed analysis of the current position of your conveyor belt.
