This is a preview version of the Content Modelling Workshop that I've co-written with Rachel Lovinger. So far we've given this workshop in Cape Town and Minneapolis. Coming soon to Helsinki, and hopefully elsewhere. This deck introduces the ideas and methodologies of content modelling. It's a subset of the slides for the workshop. The full workshop also includes more information on structured content, benefits of content modelling, many group exercises and discussions, and tips on how to putting these practices to work in real projects.
The document discusses the importance of metadata for archiving digital content and history. It describes how Jason Scott transformed from a "metadata skeptic" to a "metadata warrior" after his experiences rescuing data from Geocities. Proper metadata made the rescued data more useful, efficient to archive, and prevented duplication. The document advocates for taking a long-term view of digital content and using metadata to ensure information can be discovered and understood in the future.
Content modeling is a critical part of modern digital publishing projects, but too often it's treated as a specialist task rather than an opportunity for collaboration and communication. By looking at the content from each team's perspective, we can build a better understanding — for everyone.
This document summarizes a presentation about optimizing DITA-based content for search engine optimization. The presentation discusses how DITA content is transformed and published on the web, and what search engines like Google prioritize, such as descriptive titles, effective short descriptions, and relationship tables. It emphasizes writing content with users in mind by understanding their needs and scenarios. While techniques like keywords and Dublin Core metadata don't significantly impact rankings, focusing on user experience through topics like tasks and troubleshooting is important as search evolves to understand natural language queries.

DSpace 7 - The Angular UI from a user’s perspectiveAtmire
Presented at the Open Repositories 2019 conference in Hamburg.
"When it comes to a user’s needs, the user interface fulfills an important role. It is the connecting device between the user, and the under the hood machinery that keeps a repository running.
The soon to be released DSpace 7 will include a brand-new user interface which is based on the Angular technology. Presentations at previous Open Repositories conferences already emphasized the technical benefits of using this technology as the framework for a new DSpace user interface. Building further on those contributions this presentation will now focus on the improvements the Angular technology will bring to DSpace users and provide a functional overview of the new Angular user interface. This presentation will address improvements both for human and for machine users."

A digital library is an integrated set of services for capturing, cataloguing, storing, searching, protecting, and retrieving information, which provide coherent organization and convenient access to typically large amounts of digital information.
This document discusses taxonomy and metadata. It defines taxonomy as a classification scheme designed to group related things together, which can be informal or highly formalized. Taxonomies are semantic and provide a fixed vocabulary to label content meaningfully. Taxonomies act as knowledge maps and artificial memory devices by structuring concepts. The document also defines metadata as "data about data" such as author, title, and other information about a document. Metadata is used to identify, manage, retrieve, and connect content, as well as support business processes and records management. Standards like Dublin Core are discussed, as well as challenges around enforcing metadata use and acquiring metadata from users.
A presentation on historical development of digital libraries by Rupesh Kumar A, Assistant Professor, Department of Studies and Research in Library and Information Science, Tumkur University, Karnataka, India.
This document provides an overview of metadata and discusses its various types and uses. It defines metadata as data that describes other data, similar to street signs or maps that communicate information. There are three main types of metadata: descriptive, structural, and administrative. Descriptive metadata is used to describe resources for discovery and identification, structural metadata defines relationships between parts of a resource, and administrative metadata provides technical and management information. The document provides many examples of metadata usage and notes that metadata is key to the functioning of libraries, the web, software, and more. It is truly everywhere.

Relational databases are being pushed beyond their limits because of the way we build and run applications today, coupled with growth in data sources and user loads. To address these challenges, many companies, such as MTV and Cisco have migrated successfully from relational databases to MongoDB.
The document discusses Accenture Document Composer, a tool that simplifies the creation, filing, and distribution of HR documents and correspondence within SAP SuccessFactors. It allows users to easily create, manage, and merge document templates with data from SuccessFactors modules. All employee documents and communications can be stored and accessed in a single employee folder. The tool also enables intelligent document creation, integrated e-signing, and efficient integration with ServiceNow to automate document generation and filing.
Graph databases use graph structures to represent and store data, with nodes connected by edges. They are well-suited for interconnected data. Unlike relational databases, graph databases allow for flexible schemas and querying of relationships. Common uses of graph databases include social networks, knowledge graphs, and recommender systems.

Content Strategy in a Gutenberg World Lightning Talk at WordCamp Phoenix 2019Jamie Schmid
The document discusses how content strategy is affected by the Gutenberg block editor in WordPress. It describes how the block editor has impacted editorial workflows, author experience, and the ability to scale and distribute content. Specifically, it notes that the block editor allows more flexible content creation but also resets layouts and interfaces. This can introduce challenges for accessibility, intuitive use, and managing overrides. The document provides recommendations for templates, shared blocks, advanced plugins, and content modeling to help organizations adapt their strategies for the new editor environment.
How to integrate user experience design with content strategy in your daily workConny Liegl
User experience and content are often treated as separate entities. Interfaces are designed without considering the content that will be part of the UI. As part of this talk, we will look into strategies to becoming a better “UX writer” integrating content and UX in everyday practices. Usability principles can help to tell compelling and engaging stories. We will learn to: • Create a content model • Work with proto-content • Create content templates • Establish content governance. Kennedy Library is undergoing a content strategy and user experience overhaul in alignment with a campus-wide rebranding effort. I would like to present methods of producing quality content with UX in mind.
Content strategy involves planning for the creation, publication, and governance of content to meet organizational goals and user needs. It defines how different types of content will be used and organized, and guides decisions around the content lifecycle. Content strategy ensures that content supports the user experience and is useful, usable, and meets both business and audience needs.

Content modeling involves determining the structure of content in a content management system (CMS). This includes defining content types and their component fields. Content types correspond to types of content, like blog posts or events. Fields represent the individual chunks that make up each content type, such as title, body text, images. Defining a content model up front allows content to be stored and presented in a structured way, enabling many potential uses like calendars or feeds. It requires balancing current and future needs as well as different stakeholders. Content models can range from simple to complex and should be tested and revised as needed.
Working with Developers to Activate your Content StrategyGeorgiana Cohen
Presented by Georgy Cohen at HighEdWeb 2019
When we’re talking about digital work, sometimes we divide that work into two buckets: the “creative” work (completed by visionary unicorns) and the “technical” work (completed by heads-down colleagues who just want to be left alone to code in peace).
But this is inaccurate. The creative and technical aspects of digital work need to be aligned in order to create effective experiences. This is particularly true when we are talking about content strategy.
In this talk, I will discuss how to practically achieve successful collaboration between creative and technical teams, yielding both an effective content strategy and deeper cross-disciplinary understanding. This means being more thoughtful about team dynamics and communication, requirements gathering, information design, the interplay between code and content, and overall site governance.
This document provides a summary of content strategy concepts and best practices. It discusses how content strategy guides plans for creating, delivering, and governing content to achieve business goals. It also covers defining the substance and structure of content, establishing workflows and ownership, and using tools like content audits, style guides, and governance policies. The document recommends resources like books, websites, and people in the field to learn more about developing an effective content strategy.

The document discusses content modeling and outlines its purposes which include understanding who creates content and why, structuring content relationships, adding meaning so content makes sense to both humans and machines, delivering optimized experiences across devices, making content accessible through APIs, establishing a shared vocabulary for business content, designing author experiences based on how authors produce content, defining processes to optimize content flow, forming cross-disciplinary teams to produce and consume content, allowing content to be adapted quickly, and selecting the right technology to manage content.
The document discusses content architecture and defines it as having four important pieces: content, people, process, and technology. It provides a diagram showing the content management ecosystem and how various systems like CMS, social media, email, and ecommerce integrate together. The document emphasizes that the biggest problems in content management lie not in complexity itself, but how solutions are approached.

Content Management is a complex problem made up of content, people, process and technology. And it's getting harder has we move into a structured content world.
Content Architecture is the design phase for Content Management where we use tools to better abstract and encapsulate content, This presentation defines content architecture.
To make content intelligent so that it can be readily adapted requires greater upstream thinking and wider involvement from those responsible for planning, creating and managing content. In short, a unified content strategy. However, adaptive content also requires flexibility from the content architecture(s) delivering those unified content strategies. In this session, Cleve will present a couple of content architectures for delivering adaptive content.
